Home long should a cordless phone last?

We've had one for like 8 years and it still works.

I'm not sure how long they should last, but we've had a couple of duds.

On one, after a year or so, the batteries wouldn't re-charge properly and the hand sets would need to sit in the cradles almost all the time. We might get through one brief call. We used the speaker option, but it kind of made the "cordless" aspect useless.

On another, after a couple of years, the voice transmission was really poor. At the time, I was doing a lot of teleconferencing for work, and it was a real problem for me. I had to replace that phone immediately and didn't have time to try for a repair.

We tend to buy reputable brands, so my impression is that built-in obsolescence is an industry problem. We could have just had some bad luck though.
