Fantasy series to get me back in the loop

I need something new to read. I haven't read anything in ages. The most up to date fantasy series I've read was Harry Potter. A decade ago I read books by McAffrey, Goodkind, Bishop etc.

I'm a sahm to 3 kids (one is 2 months) and I don't get a lot of downtime so I want something that is an easy read (not Twilight).

Any recommendations?

What about the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris? It is vampires too, but her world is quite rich. It is also an easy read and the books are only about 300 pages a piece, so not a huge investment.

It's an incomplete series, but George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series (4 books so far) has been pretty good. The most recent book was ostensibly a 'split manuscript,' so the next should have come out pretty quickly - but it's been a couple years.

Other than that, he writes books that are easy to read, complex, good character development, etc.

They're not new, but I really enjoyed the Fionavar Tapestry books by Guy Gavriel Kay (The Summer Tree, The Wandering Fire, The Darkest Road). I also adore the Secret County books by Pamela Dean. They sort of epitomize the experience of a reading child (The Secret Country, The Hidden Land, The Whim of the Dragon).

I love anything that Lois McMaster Bujold writes and she's got a bunch of great fantasy books. If you're looking for something to get you laughing, you can't do better than Terry Pratchett!

TEAK's Mom. I really enjoy GGK's writing, too. Have you read his latest, Under Heaven?

Some YA fantasy series with strong writing, that many adults would enjoy:

The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix (Sabriel, Liriel and Abhorsen)

The Queen's Thief series by Megan Whelan Turner (The Thief, The King of Attolia etc.)

The Hungry City Chronicles by Phillip Reeve (Mortal Engines etc.)

I still need to read Under Heaven. Did you like it? The last GGK I read was Ysabel, which was wonderfully nostalgic for me.

I want to drink tea and talk books with you. We have similar tastes.

If you want easy reads, you might want to look at some of the good YA fantasy out there.

Tamora Pierce has been writing for a YA fantasy audience since before Harry Potter came out. Her earlier series are written as sets of 4 shorter novels. (Her newer novels are longer, because as she says, Harry Potter convinced her publisher that teens would read 300 page novels.) Her novels are true fantasy, set in various fantasy worlds.

If you liked Harry Potter, you'll probably like Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series. His is fantasy on top of the modern, real world like Harry Potter.

For an easy read try The Jane True Seriesby Nicole Peeler. It's fast paced, fun and totally addictive!

zoësmom2009, that series sounds like a kick! Kind of a, "if you liked Sookie Stackhouse, try this" sort of thing. Thanks for posting about it. Fingers crossed my library will get it in for
me.

Actually, I'm patiently waiting for my 8 year old to finish I Shall Wear Midnight so that I can have a turn.

Iain Irvine is good, didn't read the first set of books but read the quartet and last trilogy.
