In my husband's family, 8 lbs is the norm, and I personally know four women (at least) who have had at least one 12+ lb baby. All vaginally. MIL's first--FIRST!!!--was 5 kilos. That's 11 lbs. That is nearly twice what my mom had for her first baby, though MIL is much bigger boned than my mom. I voted "10+" because I know a lot of women that have eight or nine pound babies, but all via c-section because the doctors don't believe it's possible to birth a 10 lb baby.

I was 9.5lbs at birth. I've always thought that anything over that was big. DS was 8lbs, 3 oz and I honestly thought he was pretty small. I was expecting to have a 9+lber based on how big the babies in my family tend to be. Guess he was evened out by how small the babies in DH's family tend to be!

Big to me is over 10 lb. and my dd was 10 lb. 6 oz. and 22". She didn't fit in any newborn clothes and was so sturdy. I had the "family record" until my stsister had a 10 lb. 13 oz.er! When I see a 6 lb. baby it seems really small to me.

I meant to add this the other day-- I've never had a baby and I haven't spent much time around newborns, so I think my perspective is informed by that. IOW-- I was thinking more about how the numbers "sound," and not how babies of those weights look, etc. I think that goes for a lot of the population-- since almost half are men and many (men and women) have either never had kids or haven't been around many newborns within, say, the last 5 years.

I remember thinking my 8 lb 1 oz baby was big, but she was also early (I was 37 and change). I wouldn't say 8 lbs was big in the abstract, though--I'd put it around 9.5 - 10lbs. Definitely, anything over 10 is wow, big! I've seen an 11 lb newborn and that is for sure a BIG baby.

I answered 11lb +

Both of my babies were in the 10 pound range. DS1 was 10lb, 6oz and DS2 was 10lb, 1 oz.

Yes, they were big, but fortunately I didn't have any complications due to it.

all of my sibs were in the 8-9 lb range, except for one who was 10+. so for me, i was expecting a baby in that range. mine was 5lb 10oz (and 5 weeks early), my sister's was well over 10 lb.

to me, a 10+ baby is pretty darn big. not crazy huge until you get to 10.5 or 11 lbs though. and under 6lbs is teeny tiny to me. my baby fit in preemie clothes for the first month at least. i wouldn't bat an eye at being told a baby weighed in the 9lbs range though... even though i know a lot of people would consider that massive.

I think over 10 is big.

I've had two 11 lb babies (11, 1oz, and 11lb,14 oz), who were both huge. My middle son was only 9lb,7oz, and he seemed like a peanut. Everyone around me thought he was big, but I knew different. LOL. All about perspective.

9 lbs + is big to me. 7-8 look normal. My kids were all in the 6 lb range and they seemed really small. They chunked up fast, though.

My daughter was 8 pounds and so many people said how big that was, I just think it was normal. I just had my son less than two weeks ago and he was 11 pounds and 3 ounces and I do think that is big. He is the biggest baby in my family, but is as healthy as can be.

In my family, full-term babies always come out 6 and a half lbs. So my baby was "big" at 8 lbs and 10 ounces. That also sounds big if you take into consideration that I was 117lbs pre-pregnancy and built small.

IME anything over 9 is seen as a big baby. dd was 8 lb 9 oz, ds was 9 lb 2 oz and everyone thought they were huge. They were both long at 22 inches too though.

For me 9+ is a big juicy baby. Little babies make me nervous to hold, I might break them! DD was 9.5 lbs and I was coerced into a scheduled cesarean, won't do that again.

my dd was 11 lbs 10 oz! And 22.5 inches. My ds was the same length, and 12 lbs. Ds was solidly built (still is, he is 7.5 yrs, 80 lbs, and 4'8") but dd had ROLLS on her back and thighs. Oh my. Lol. Dd is now tall and slim, narrow-framed. Looking back, tho ds was the heavier babyh, dd was definitely the fatter baby - ds is built big while dd is built tall and slim....she just porked up in utero lol

Whenever I hear about anyone giving birth to a baby 10+, I`m just thinking Ouch! 10+ is a BIG baby.
About 4 Kg is not uncommon, but about 3,5 Kg is the average I think.
