Playing in the snow?

DS just turned a year old at the end of September. Obviously, we are getting into winter... And I wasn't sure at what age babies/kids start to like to play in the snow. I have a warm jacket/hat/mittens for him regardless, but I wasn't sure if I should look for boots. If we're just going out for walks in the stroller/sled/baby carrier he won't need them. He's also not really into playing with others, or even much with toys; he's still at the wander around and destroy the house stage!! So if we do go out to play in the snow, what do we do??

He'll probably just walk around and touch everything, sit in it, throw it. Give him a bucket, maybe treat it like sand. See what he does.
DS was a bit younger than yours last winter. A year in dec. All we did was sled rides if necessary. It was way too cold to actually play most days. (think, minus 40)

ETA. I saw a really cool website that said put a whole bunch of snow in the tub. That way they can play with it without being freezing. Might work better for older kids though.

Target has very nice boots that are rated for very cold temperatures and they're only about $15. I've gotten them every year for DC, though I haven't bought them yet this year. At that price, I thought that it was a risk worth taking to buy boots in case they need them... and, if they don't, I spent $15 on a toy that my kids really like to put on. I have no idea what it is about them and boots, but boy do they love them!

I looove snow, and we got a snowsuit for the little one (she is not walking yet), and I'm looking for boots, as well (lach - can you post a link for the boots? or PM me?). Plan is - find some undisturbed snow and just let her explore - roll, sit in it, etc.
She loves knocking over blocks, so we'll try something similar with snow!

Is there something for babies that allows them to be pulled in the snow (like a sled) but also safely tied to it?

DD was a little under 1 when she was first exposed to snow and she loved it! It's not like she was building snowmen or something but she definitely was interested in how it felt to walk through it (not easy!) and touch it. Just let him explore as much as possible. We had robeez boots for DD and bundled her up in a snowsuit.

These are the ones we've gotten for the past 2 years, and they seem to work well. They're lined with fleecy stuff, and seem warm and comfortable. And the price is cheap enough that I wouldn't feel that I wasted a lot of money if they didn't get much use.

In past years, they've had a few (2 or so others?) other styles to choose from, too.

Thanks so much for the boot link! We have some Columbia boots that were handed down to us, but they're still WAY too big. DS is huge for his age, but still has teeny little feet...

My February baby didn't start trying to walk until 13 months, and was still too unsteady to walk in the snow for most of the winter. Crawling in snow was no fun, and he preferred to be carried. He liked it better in May when it was just melting out (15 months), so needed boots then (we just had homemade felt ones, though).
