Interested in Hypnobabies, do I *have* to get the expensive set?

I read Ina May's stuff, Bradley stuff, and other books with natural birth inspiration for my first two births, all of which helped me prepare for and get through my births, but I'm curious about hypnobirthing. Looking around online, there's a 150$ kit with books and CDs you can buy, a 13$ book that seems to describe the method, and other options.

What have you used, what would you recommend?

TIA

i have hypnobabies. I think you need everything, the CD and the books. You will listen to the cds every night and during birth. The books has more educational stuff about birthing and what order to play the cds in.

Right now I think they are running a 20% of sale - they have a yahoo group and facebook page.

I am not sure about a $13 book, I have never seen one. There is hypnobabies and hypnobirthing, so there might be 2 different books.

You need the full home study course, if you're doing it on your own (I haven't taken a class, just done the home study). You need the CDs if you really want to do it. The books it comes with makes it a complete childbirth education class, but also explains about HBs general, the cues and such for the tracks that week etc, and what you really really need are the CDs.

I love HBs, used it very successfully for my first birth and just love relaxing to it this time.

Hypnobirthing and Hypnobabies are two different methods of using hypnosis for childbirth. Here is a website comparing the two from someone who has used both methods. Near the bottom of that page are links to a comparison from another mom who used both and also from a teacher who has taught both types of classes.

I did a lot of research before choosing to go with Hypnobabies with my first child. The very first thing I said to my husband after my son was born was "That was definitely worth the money we spent on Hypnobabies!" I do not regret buying the Home Study Course at full price and would recommend it over Hypnobirthing to anyone interested in hypnosis because it is just such a thorough program.

And just FYI, right now Hypnobabies is having their fall sale until Nov 5th and you can get 20% off the Home Study Course and other tracks on CD. The code is available on their Facebook page or the Yahoo Group if you join either of those.

From my personal experiene, I don't think I would have been able to use the technique well without having listened to the CD's every night. The reading was VERY useful too. Maybe not 100% necessary, but I'd say fairly necessary.

I struggled with spending the money considering all of the money I'd spent on other various and sundry things to help me get through pregnancy...but this would be one of the things that was well worth its cost. Not only was it helpful in labor, it was extremely helpful all throughout pregnancy as far as reducing anxiety and helping me to get a good night's rest.

Hypnobabies is worth every cent. Yes, you need it all.

This will be my third birth using the same home study course. It's awesome throughout pregnancy as well as being a powerful tool for labour. When I'm done having babies I'll sell it to another mama.

I agree that the book you are referring to is probably a different method.

You may also get lucky and find the home study on craigslist or similar. There are also used copies selling on eBay, you just need to pay attention to which version you're buying as there have been some updates to the material over time.

I didn't expect such enthusiastic support, thanks! And thank you for the links.

I'm extra fascinated now....

They also go up for sale on Ebay pretty frequently, and if you're patient and/or a good Ebay stalker, you can get a set usually for around $80-90.

Thanks for the code! I just ordered it! I was going to wait, but a deal is a deal!

Thanks so much for the info everyone! I just ordered mine, I can't wait!
I had been thinking of taking a course but just couldn't figure out how DH & I would be able to get out of the house on a weeknight for 5wks in a row & leave our 2yo DD at bedtime. This works much better & I'll take $140 any day over the $310 for an in person course.

How soon should/can you start the program?

If you start early, you have to keep practicing the whole time till birth, so balance that in your head. Seems better to do it so you are ready just a handful of weeks ahead and it is nice and fresh in your mind and you haven't gotten sick of practice times.

I'm starting way too late because of all my moving and such held things up, so I would not wait too long either, that just causes stress I certainly don't need!

I was thinking about hypnosis, but I wasn't sure which one to go with. I am definitely going to go with Hypnobabies after reading this thread. One thing, though - I don't need all the info about pregnancy and whatnot. Is there a cheaper set that just focuses on the hypnosis?
