how do you treat mommas n babbs for thrush?? i *think* we may have it as my nipples are bright pink after each feed and im getting shooting pains starting in my breast going to nipples when we nurse, also my right one feels itchy when she feeds???? different from let down which to me feels like sharp pins n needles

just wondering how it's treated and how urgent it it because my family doc/mw is shut for another two days. is it worth a trip to a+e?? i think that may be overdoing it but at the same time is it fair for baby to wait another 2 days for treatment??

is there anything over the counter babies can have?

totally un-informed on this subject

she may also have it down below as her inner girly parts look a bit red?? just noticed today

I also used the gentian violet. Be prepared to have a baby with a purple mouth and purple nipples for awhile, but it works. It is actually what the doctor recommended to me when we dealt with thrush.

I was able to get rid of it with my babe by taking grapefruit seed extract. I took it orally and it transferred through my milk to my DD. I had much better results with this than the doctor-prescribed nystatin.

hello! i tried GV last night, mixed with a little coconut oil

purple nurples!

last night dd was hysterical for the first time ever so i hope the GV kicks in soon, ive also taken grapefruit seed extract and boiled my bras.... now theyre too small *doh*

doctor prescribed us some nystatin and canesten but not picked up prescription yet, will get it and try it if we're still suffering in a week.

fingers crossed!

oh yeah, does thrush cause babies bums to be red? and their poop to be really wet? shes only 3+ weeks old and just started to ebf after her having a 2oz bottle in the evenings (i had to literally force my milk in ive been poorly due to post section infection so topped babe up) so it may just be her changing from combine fed poop to breastfed poop but i wouldnt know, i cant remember ds nappies lol

THis is what I am did/doing:
-taking a acidophilus(sp?)
-putting coconut oil on my nipples before every feeding
-rinsing nipples with vinegar/water solution after each feeding
-cut out all dairy (which I've been doing since her birth)
-cut out almost all sugar (there are still some 'sneaky' sugars that still creep in..lol)

This is what I am doing for my baby:
-she is taking Baby's Jarro-Dophilus
-I am swabbing her mouth randomly throughout the day with coconut oil.
-I put coconut oil on her diaper area every diaper change

Dr. confirmed thrush and gave us 2 prescriptions (Nystatin and something else I can't remember). I still have the prescription and I don't think I will use them because the thrush seems to be "gone" for now. No need for meds here!
When we went back for check up, he didn't even see any signs of thrush!

I just got rid of thrush...YAH!!!!!

This is what I did. ( I caught it early too...baby didn't get it thankfully)

I mixed a solution of Grapefruit Seed Extract to apply to my breasts. It was 10 drops to 1 oz of water. I put this on before and after every feeding. I was religious about it. Let it air dry on breasts.

I then put 2% miconazole on my breast after every feeding ( and after the GSE had air dried on my breasts). This is just over the counter yeast infection cream.

I kept this up and my breasts are free and clear without a script or baby catching it ( i had her Ped. AND a Nurse Practitioner check her mouth multiple times). I'm continuing to do GSE 3 times a day as a precautionary measure as well as the miconazole at bedtime.

I found this protocol on Jay Neuman's site.

Good luck!

GPs always seem to prescribe nystatin for oral thrush, yet I don't know anyone it has worked for - even my midwife said it was rubbish.

OK, ds and I had thrush for about 8 weeks, from when he was 10 days old. He had both oral thrush and a thrush nappy rash. Firstly hygiene is really important - hot wash all nappies, muslins, bras, breastpads etc. Daktarin oral gel (miconazole I think?) sorted out the oral thrush in a couple of days, I also got canestan (clotrimazole) cream for my nipples, and canestan HC cream (clotrimazole and hydrocortisone) for the nappy rash. We initially got daktarin cream for the nappy rash, but it didn't get rid of it - the canestan HC did. If the thrush is deep in your breast you may need a course of fluconazole for you too.

The Breastfeeding Network do a really good leaflet on thrush and breastfeeding here - http://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org....stfeeding.html
It could be useful to print out to take to your GP with you, since some GPs don't believe in breast thrush

if no one else has posted this link, here's jack newman's candida protocol

i am in the final stages of treating thrush (using the above protocol) and am about halfway through a diflucan rx.

my lc said that if you're getting the shooting pains in your breasts, the yeast is in the milk ducts and should be treated systemically. you may be able to do this with probiotics, grapefruit seed extract pills and/or dilflucan. i used all three.

keeping up with all the treatments and hygiene is really a pain. some shortcuts on hygiene: i used disposable breast pads to avoid all the washing. or you can iron the cups of your bras on high steam to kill the yeasty-beasties. sterilize all pacifiers (or anything else that your baby puts in his mouth) daily.

hang in there. it's tough.
