Does Sodium Ascorbate Help Later on in Pertussis?

I have been having coughing fits for 62 days now, I strongly suspect Pertussis. Started after a couple days of feeling off/mild cold, no fever, then it was in my chest. About 2.5 weeks in I had an x-ray and it was labeled "Bronchitis" so I took abx. That didn't help so 3 weeks later I went back and they took another chest x-ray, second time was clear too. He did not think it was asthma but prescribed Flovent for "inflammation", but when I looked into it and all of the side effects I was too scared to take it.

So it's now just over 8 weeks and I still have a dry cough that comes in fits, usually after 5pm it is worse. During the morning it doesn't feel as bad but I have this constant tickle and feeling of irritated airways when I breathe.

I caught this after a year of really good health, only a couple light colds that I wiped out quickly with Elderberry. I have been supplementing with D3 as well. It's been upsetting as I hardly ever get chest colds when I have gotten sick in the past and the one time I have had bronchitis before did NOT feel like this. I've been doing everything I can think of for this- Elderberry, Olive Leaf Extract, Turmeric, Garlic, Mullein Tea etc.

I tried Sodium Ascorbate for a day or two (not to saturation) but it has actually seemed to make my cough worse. I have been reading old threads and it sounds like taking it early on is best. I was curious if anyone tried it later and if it made any difference. Or if there is no point in trying now.

Also, does it just go away one day? It was worse in the first 6 weeks then seemed to taper off a bit but now it's just holding steady, not much progress. I feel like my lungs will be messed up forever. =(

yikes. have you thought about homeopathy? a good remedy can often knock it out of the park with very little effort. If you don't have a homeopath a combo (sacrilege!) can even work. you really can't begin to heal when you're still having coughing fits.

SA does work in the midst of a fit, in my experience....but it's not always enough. it *improves* things generally...but improvement is cold comfort when you've been coughing so hard you're vomiting. Yay that you're only gagging instead, right? not so much.

You can also try essential oils, but I know for most people I work with homeopathy is what really changes things. I hope you find what works, because it's not fun. You have my sympathy.

I have, just not been sure of what to try. I don't know a homeopath but I have a friend who is pretty knowledgeable. I have been considering trying Drosera.
Yes, thank goodness I am not vomiting. Just dry cough now with some gagging when I have the fits, worse in the evening. I can go for periods during the day where I don't cough, but my chest always feels odd.
Been doing essential oils from the start. Steam etc. Also good probiotics. Hopefully I can get some more relief soon.
Thanks for your input.

if you have it, you can certainly try it. what I have been using with great success is a low potency combo that people sip throughout the course of the day. it has drosera in it. it's excellent for people who haven't really been helped by single remedies.

a good homeopath can find the right remedy at the right potency to bring relief. if you don't have time or money for that a combo may be a better solution.

My DD has had the same thing...it's just coming under control by using her homeopathic remedy (constitutional--I think that's the correct term).

Our family doctor think she is probably allergic to ragweed, based upon when her coughing began (just like yours, with a very slight cold)--end of August, start of ragweed season.

I don't know where you are, but where I am (northeast) the pollen count has been pretty high. Anyway, the natural supplements store by me carries a homeopathic blend specific to allergens in the northeast...it's a spray made by Bioking, I think. My doc takes it herself for ragweed (instead of OTC meds) and says it has worked wonders for her. If you're not in the northeast, maybe they make one for your area?

Good luck! Coughing is horrible.
