Cold Hands at Night?

Thread Starter
My oldest coslept so we never had this problem, but my youngest happily sleeps in her crib. When she woke last night to eat her little hands were freezing!! She sleeps in PJs and a sleep sack, not sure what else to add. I put those newborn mittens on her last night, but she can just pull them off and/or suck on them and they strike me as kind of a choking hazard at this point.
We keep our house at between 72-75 degrees, but the way our stupid heating system is set up the bedrooms are about 5 degrees colder than the livingroom/kitchen. To get it warmer in that area I have to turn the thermostat up to almost 80 degrees....
Ideas?

Oh my goodness...I was going to post about the same thing right now! lol

My little one also has freezing hands at night when she wakes up to feed!? Like your babe, she sleeps in her long sleeve, bottom foot pj's and a sleep sack. When her hands are cold, I put them under my breasts as she feeds to warm them back up but I feel horrible. I sometimes pull her in bed with me to keep her body temperature ideal because I feel so badly. I have no idea what else to do!? I thought about mittens but I too see them as a choking hazard!

I hope someone chimes in with some ideas.

You just reminded me that I was going to look around for a solution for this too. I've been swaddling, but he's just starting to want to pull out of it, and our bedrooms get more chilly too. Not to be selfish in motivation, but when it's time for a middle of the night nursing and I feel a little icecube hug my side.. yeowch!!

tentative solution:
I'm looking for pj's that have the built-in flip cuffs.. harder to find beyond newborn size, but they do exist. Here's one in cozy fleece that I think I'm going to get- the SlumberSack. BuyBuyBaby is the only in-store place I've found for it.

BabyGap sells kimonos with the flip-mittens in beyond-newborn sizes, but they have bad reviews for fabric and sizing.

I've thought about the cuffs...but my little one sucks her thumb in the middle of the night to get back to sleep and I DON'T want to take that thumb away from her or she would wake more often!! lol

I don't have any suggestions for the Mamas with thumbsuckiong babies, but if the thumb isn't an issue, one of my twin nieces wakes up with freezing hands at night, so my sister has started putting socks on her little hands, pulled up to above her elbow, and then a long sleeve shirt over, so she can't get it off, and that seems to do the trick. Both my newborn nieces are paci babies, though.

My LO seems to have no problem sucking through the fabric, he just wakes up with really wet hands (I don't know if that's any better though...)

I was told that babys' hands and feet are always colder than the rest of their bodies, and not to assume they're cold based only on that. A more reliable way is to feel their necks. My babe's hands were always cold, even at the height of summer.

IME, cold hands in a child means the child is cold. Since babes don't have much hair, a light cap/hat can be a big help. Babies have trouble regulating their own temperature.

Maybe a little space heater for that room, so it'll be warmer than the rest of the house?  I never could keep socks/mittens/hats to stay on my babe for more than a few seconds...

My little one has cold hands too. I try to raise the thermostat at night b/c the kids room is much colder than the rest of the house. Space heater won't work b/c DS 4y is in his own bed and I'd be afraid of him getting hurt.

I guess I kinda feel like if it bothered her she'd wake up.

We had the same problem so I turn on a warm mist humidifier every night, and voila! Toasty warm hands and no stuffy nose to boot!
