In spite of my earlier griping about how much money I've spent this month...  After running the numbers, I've spent about $1200 less than my average in the past 3 months.  Some of this is due to completing some household projects, like building a shed, but quite a bit is also because I'm really paying attention to what I'm doing with my money.  I've saved more than my "budgeted" amount too!  I know the month's not over yet, and I do plan on doing some Christmas shopping, but I feel like I'm throwing less money away.  Just gotta curb that coffee habit....

Thanks mamas for keeping me motivated!!  love.gif

I feel like I've fallen off the wagon. Bought myself another sweater yesterday (Costco, so kinda cheap, but I don't need any more clothes!!) Why do I have such a hard time at the end of the month? It's like I am proud of doing so well all month, so I then break my goal by "rewarding" myself with a purchase. Ridiculous. Also, my Starbucks trips have gottten out of control this month. Oh, I feel so weak. But I'm still here, right? Giving myself an early no spend today. Snow day here, so no school. We will go sledding and not out to spend.

14. $27 groceries, $30 household (tea tree oil and a $20 community coupon book)

15. $73 groceries, $13 household (supplements and cosmetics), $9 Starbucks

16. $61 yarn and knitting needles. RETURNED $43, but then bought $37 fabric on 11/20.

19. $45 yarn, birdseed, mattress pad (household), $21 groceries, $6 thrift store sweater - broke my no clothes goal , but got a cute sweater (for me)

I have a problem with justifying all spending even when I have vowed to be "no spend".  I make a plan.  Then suddenly....welll homeschool stuff doesn't count.  Well.....household stuff like a candle doesn't count.  Well.....eating out cuz we ran out of time doesn't count.

Really, I think you have to adjust your methods. Take one month to just track everything (not trying to justify extra spending in one category or another, just tracking it). Then you can look at that tracking and make a more realistic budget so you have categories for everything. I made that mistake the first month, trying to give myself budgeted categories without really knowing how much i realistically was going to spend, and then feeling like a failure for not following it. And having too many no-spend days, which should really be to curb boredom shopping, not stopping you from buying stuff you need. Anyway, I feel really good about my spending this month. I'm not restricting myself, so that I feel tempted to lie to the computer about where my money is going, but I'm just staying aware of my spending habits throughout the month. At the end, I'll add it all up and talk to my husband about whether there's an area that needs to be trimmed, and hopefully I can go from there.

I think a good budgeter wouldn't need any "no-spend" days at all, since really, who cares if you spend $5 every day or $100 all in one shot. It's whether that $100 is going where it needs to go, not what day it was spent on.

I am going to try and chart EVERYTHING now til Dec 31.  That may give me a more realiztic idea.

I think part of the issue is that I am a perfectionist and overthink every purchase.

Oh, wow, I needed to hear this! Thanks! I get so down on myself for small but necessary purchases that are in the budget. I need to not obsess so much about trying for no-spend days!

I'm another one with a serious Starbucks habit.  I do better once it's cold enough for hot mochas.  Those I can make at home.  It's the iced dark cherry mochas (mmm!) that get me.  I tried to find a good cherry syrup so I can make my own, but no dice so far.
