Super infrequent poops in a 2 month old???

DD2 is just about 2 months and has very infrequent bowel movements. She had lots when it was meconium, but since then it was only about once a day. in the past few weeks it has become much more infrequent. She is gaining well (has gained over 3 lbs at 7 weeks). She doesn't seem fussy or uncomfortable at all, but I am wondering what is going on. DD1 pooped all the time until about 3 months, then at least once per day. Here are DD2's BM for the past 2 weeks (when I noticed they were much more infrequent)

Oct. 19- Large
Oct. 21- Small (size of 2 quarters???)
Oct. 23- 2 medium
Oct 24- SUPER BIG
Oct. 26- Large
Oct. 28- Small (this is the first seedy poo in more than a month)
nothing since then

I have been gluten and dairy free for almost 2 weeks and the poo was much more seedy on the 28th.... it was pure liquid before that.

She had a big patch of eczema on her forehead that is almost gone, so I know she has some sensitivity to either dairy or gluten. I was hoping it would improve the poop situation too.

What do you all think?

There is a wide range of frequency for BF babies. As in, some go multiple times a day (DS1), some go once a day (DS2), or even up to a week in between. If she doesn't seem uncomfortable and the poop isn't dry and hard, I'd just keep an eye on her.

Honestly, it seems pretty normal. Some breastfed babies will consistently go 7-10 days without a poo and then explode a diaper. Like the PP said, as long as she isn't uncomfortable and it isn't dark and hard, she seems fine.

I was used to it after the newborn stage, but my midwife said it is not super common to have a new baby (I guess under about 3 months) poop so infrequently. Was just wondering if anyone had a baby (less than about 3 months) poo so infrequently? DD1 pooped at every feeding until about 2 then multiple times a day until about 3-4 months and then about every day.

DD2 has gone only about once per day since she was a few days old. Now it is even less.

She is wetting normally and gaining weight, so I guess I shouldn't be worried, but it is just so much different than DD1.

Thanks

Could be normal for her, but it could also be a red flag. For DS, it was a sign he wasn't getting enough BM due to tt, but it it doesn't seem that you're having transfer issues.

Thats exactly right - and it starts between 6 - 8 weeks - this is only true for Bfed babies.

My DD pooped every 7-10 days until she was 4 months. At that point I gave her a dose of infant probiotics and since then she has been going almost everyday.

When she was going really infrequently she would get obviously uncomfortable (and SMELLY) on the last couple of days. I gave her the probiotics to help with some mild thrush and it helped get her more regular. My chiro said while they say it is normal that it is better to have them pooping more often. I would try the probiotics and see if it helps.

Very normal. At about 7 or 8 weeks my babies went suddenly from pooping a few times per day to going every couple of days. Then it became about once a week. Sometimes 8 or 9 days. There's a thread a ways back about a baby not pooping for two weeks. All the posters assured the mama it was normal.

ditto!
my 2 month old was every 7-11 days, i gave her a glycerin suppository twice as she seemed uncomfortable. i started her on probiotics and she went to once a day BM! i also guided her to go from a 2 hour routine (sleep-eat-play) to a 3 hour routine to get bigger meals (and longer naps).
i do think that the pattern you listed is totally normal, but no harm in the probiotics.

Totally normal!

My DS is almost 6 months old and consistently poops every 7-10 days, ever since he was 6 weeks old. He is EBF, midwife and Dr said it can be completely normal for EBF babies because there is so little waste and the babies metabolize almost everything in the milk. When it does happen though, it's quite an event.

Just adding to the chorus of "normal." I posted a similar question not that long ago myself, and now I know this is just how my DS is. (However, his infrequent pooping started around 4 weeks - but he is fine!) His longest stretch between poops (so far) was his first one - 13 days. Since then he goes about once a day, but will sometimes skip a few days. The only sign I have that a blowout is imminent is that his farts start to stink. In fact, just today DS had not pooped since last Thursday or Friday - he made a loud stinky fart early this morning, then a few hours later had a complete diaper blowout. He never even gets uncomfortable - this is just normal for him. When you DD does poop, you should just make sure everything looks normal in terms of the consistency of the poop (should still be pretty much just the same as when when your DD poops daily), and you will know she is just fine!

The consistency was very different than DD1's, which is why I was worried before (when she was pooping every day or every other day). Her last BM was pretty much the same consistency as when DD1 was pooping on Breast Milk only, but it was pretty small for having gone a few days without pooping. Like I said, I have been off of wheat and dairy for almost 2 weeks. I think she may have a sensitivity (DD1 did and I think DH does).

Thanks for all the info. I am feeling a bit better. I will talk to my midwife about the probiotics again.

from a different perspective, I know this can be very normal, as so many people have commented, but I went through this with ds and he is now almost 8 mos. It got to a point that he was going less than once a week, and in combo with "pre ecsema" I finally convinced his dr to recommend an allergy blood test. He came back sensitive to wheat, dairy, fish, eggs, peanuts, and soy. I have cut these things out in the last two weeks or so and he has gone back to his old style of pooping, every day or two, runny instead of thick, smelling more like buttermilky sweet than stinky adult bms, and now I realize that for me cutting just wheat and dairy 2 mos ago wasnt enough. I would have never guessed fish, and I took fish oil every day. Especially for his ecsema, I almost started giving it to him. So glad I didnt. I also took soy lecithin every day to prevent plugged milk ducts and I cut that too. I think if your concerned, I would look deeper. Ds Dr suggested prune juice and I finally gave into it. But after the second dose he didnt even poop it out. Also, I know they use alot of whats in bm, but It didnt make sense to me why all of a sudden he would "blow out" his diaper. obviously hes not using it all, and its storing up in there. Ds was never fussy about going poop, but he was fussy in general. Never grimanced before or while pooping, never heard gas rumbling in his tummy, etc. Just think theres waay more to these weird poops in babies, and its worth looking into if your concerned. I dont mean to be long winded, but if I would have continued to take the advice "its normal" I would still be battling this, and ds temperment has already changed, and as a 6x per night waker, he actaully slept from 10 pm to 8 am this morning not waking at ALL in between.
