OK has a low COL and ridiculously lax homeschooling laws

Not an Okie by birth and not in line with the majority of state views, but I do see the benefit of this state.

Agreeing with this. And actually, sounds like you and I have mirror image backgrounds (I went from banking in NYC to teaching). There are plenty of non-red states in dire need of teachers (even business teachers if that's your endorsement--I know those jobs are harder to come by because that's mine). I'm trying to think of where I just got solicitation from and although it's not east, I want to say IN (which is a green hsing state). Also, as someone that just relocated from the east coast, I'm wondering exactly where in the east you're looking to be--because you'd be looking at a heck of a COL.

Also agreeing that IBR IS repaying your loan. Just on a sliding scale with what your income is. If you have that much financial background, then honestly--even if they gave you deference, it would only be because you QUALIFY for it...? It's not the same as skipping out on your bills voluntarily.

I'm not sure if you have an undergrad in business and then got an alternate route teaching certificate? Or if you actually have a master's? But have you checked all the online schools and local colleges to see if you can teach Associate's level coursework as an adjunct? Or teaching high school online through one of the many state online charter schools for parents who school-at-home?

I know teaching jobs are really hard to come by these days (even for experienced teachers), but if you are willing to relocate, I really think you could find something, somewhere to earn some money. What about a preschool, or even daycare if you had to temporarily to make ends meet?

Absolutely apply for a deferment or income-based repayment with your student loans. That's what those programs are there for. It's not fair that you spent all that time in school, earned a teaching license, and then are expected to pay back loans w/o being able to find a job. I wouldn't feel the least bit bad holding off on paying them back right now - the interest should be low enough to not make much of a difference, anyhow.

Wanted to add that some red states have the most lax homeschooling rules around- MS is one.

I live in LA and some of the charter schools are still looking for teachers; there was an ad in the paper the other day. My SIL was able to move from PA to FL and get a teaching job immediately. Subs who are certified teachers in my parish make $95 a day, which is not bad compared to the areas around here. If you are willing to move, you should be able to find something.

Mississippi is a yellow state. Reds have the highest state regulations and most amount of rules. http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp
