Everythin's BROKE (a vent)

I don't know if this is the right place...but here goes...

About 6 weeks ago our doorbell stopped working. I changed the batteries, but no cigar, so we resolved to buy a new one.

About 4 weeks ago, when we still hadn't gotten around to getting the new doorbell, our shower pump broke. We have a system boiler and hot water cylinder, so the water pressure is very low when the pump is off - you have to run about in the shower to get wet! We got a plumber in and the best part of ÂŁ200 later we have a new, really good, shower pump.

On Friday morning we woke up to no heating or hot water. We got our plumber back and he recommended a gas-fitter. Our boiler is dead. It's had zero maintenance for the past decade (we bought this house in January this year) and is rusted, dusted and sooted up to the point that the gas valve, ignition, seals and thermostat are all dead. So we have no heating or hot water while i wait for our plumber to come back and assess what the best option from here might be (another system boiler or a combi boiler...).

Luckily we have a gas fire in one room and i have a few electric fan heaters to use for bedrooms come the evenings. We are double glazed so heat i put in lasts a little. Cold showers ain't fun and i seem to be the only person in the house who can bear them. I heated a bunch of pots and kettles on Friday night to make a shallow tepid bath for DD1 and i, and not only did she pee in it immediately, i managed to break my slowcooker crock pot by putting it onto the hot hob with cool water in it

On Sunday the (ancient) house alarm (which is so random we never use it and it was NOT armed when it...) started to go off. We were in, just sitting there reading when it happened. It was the internal alarm but it wouldn't respond to the codes being entered. It was like the keypad had died and set the alarm off. I ended up having to disconnect it from the mains to shut it up which set the external alarm off too, so i had to cut IT'S wire too and wait for the battery to run down.

This morning (monday) DH filled the bathroom sink from the kettle to have a shave and thermal shock BROKE the sink! I hated that sink anyway...lol, but now we need a new sink and pedestal....

I am laughing so i don't cry! I am glad this all happened now and not right when DD2 was due/born, but still... We are trying to look on the bright side - when this is over and done with we will KNOW the boiler, shower-pump, alarm and (ta-da!) DOORBELL are new, good-quality and well-maintained. And our bathroom sink will be tasteful and useful (the broken one is weirdly deep and narrow, like washing your hands in a porcelain bucket that takes half an hour to fill). But our coffers are going to be EMPTY!

HUGS.... things tend to run in groups like that and hopefully everything is done breaking for awhile.... (however I wouldnt mind a broken doorbell!)

I don't recommend fixing the doorbell until DD2 has given up naps. (Mine was disconnected for years!)

I'm sorry everything is hitting at once. It makes me feel so un-secure when my world gets rocked like that. I hope you find equilibrium again before your newest LO arrives.

I have a punch list where I write in needed repairs. Things like roof leak, rusted electrical, flooded septic, and water heater were things I made dh repair right away. My neighbor says *Boy you have had nothing but problems with that house*,but I look at is as home ownership.Things will always break.

Sorry all happened at once. That is the tough thing.

When my water heater broke it flooded the house, then the gas pipe leaked, and the rooster died.It was a very long night. We were most upset about our roo...poor guy.

Hopefully you will have a breather.Lol,I second the recommendation to leave the door bell.

The thing is, i know we would NEVER get to the stage of saying "ok, now let's spend ÂŁ2k on getting a better boiler" until this one DID break, so really the event was inevitable, even if the timing was not our own choosing. I'm feeling grateful it wasn't at a time when we had to pay our MW (her whole fee was on us as the NHS offers a homebirth service so they won't cover an IM HB at all) or mid-winter when it would have been WAY harder to keep the kids warm.

Our plumber is going to fit us a new combi boiler and hopefully a new sink and pedestal (i have done a quick safe-making of tape and sealing of silicon sealant for the time being) on Thursday-Friday, so hopefully by the weekend we'll be more or less back to normal. Boiler job is ÂŁ2100, which is very reasonable as far as i can tell.

I'm NOT getting another doorbell right now. Which is funny since they're probably like, a couple of bucks, but still that's bucks i could spend on the beer i BADLY need to celebrate with when all the repairs are done LMAO (one beer and i fall off my chair!).

I am using the bathroom being out of action to my own benefit - i resealed the badly-needing-it bath today, i've never had a long enough gap in use for it to dry before without it being really inconvenient - i had a shower right before i did it and it should be dry by the time i have my shower tomorrow after my run. It's weirdly ok having cold showers now i'm used to the idea of it being for a finite period.

I think it's adorable that you don't want to buy a doorbell for the beer money..lol

We moved into our house last May just as the weather was getting hot..And our air conditioner busted. I sat here all day wondering why the house was getting HOTTER instead of cooling down, and by the time I realized that the air wasn't workign at all it was too late to get someone out to fix it. But they were able to come out the next day. Then our garage door broke and wouldn't close. But we were able to fix that on our own. The other day one of our ceramic tiles came loose. The guy who owned our house kept it beautiful and it looks great...However, I have a feeling he was a do-it-yourselfer who half-a$$ed a lot of the work.

I would buy the beer too! Been watching those Samual Adams beer commericals, and I really want to try their seasonal beers.

Speedy repairs!

Duct tape and gorilla glue have been helpful unless ofcourse it is plumbing related.Luckily after my water tank blew my elderly neighbors hooked me up with 2 plumbers that live close by.

The plumber just left having fitted the new sink.

The combi boiler got fitted 2 weeks ago.  It's sooooo lovely here now.  Hot water whenever i turn the tap on, drinking water out of the bathroom taps (a concern when one's kids seem to prefer bath water to anything else!), unlimited showers (sorry mother earth!) deep baths whenever you want (hardly ever) without having to plan...  ALL of us can have a long shower one after another, without half of us having a cold one or having to share with the kids by necessity rather than preference.  The house is warm, and the new controller means i have WAY more control over the heating than before.  It's MARVELLOUS.

The new sink is smaller than the last, and makes the bathroom feel way bigger, plus the plumber hid the pipes much better than the person who'd put the last one in had, so it looks much more neat and clean in there (which is a miracle given how i have NOT cleaned it! LOL).

And, when turning the water back on after fitting the sink, he found the main stopcock for the house, which was for some reason partially off, and turned it fully on, which has massively improved the water pressure.

It has been a long 6 weeks, and cost us about £2200, but it's been worth it.  We took the old boiler to the scrap man and got £87 for the copper, so another gain, AND we managed to sell the shower pump on to another customer of our plumber, getting £80 for it (cost us £126 but £80 was a good 2nd hand price).

So, happy ending :)

Sorry mama, but I busted out laughing when I got to this point. It does bring back memories though. We moved in our current house in August 06, by November we had repaired the leaking roof, relined the chimney, installed a hot water heater and replaced a cracked boiler. All of these were surprises, and not fun.

Glad to hear your update, sounds like things are good, for now (fingers crossed?).

By the way our doorbell is still broken.
