ladyelmo,
I hate colds when pregnant. Hopefully you are past the congestion aggravating any morning sickness.
When Im sick I take 50,000 IUI of Vitamin D for 3 days and then drop back to 10,000 IUI. Not nessecarily recommending others do that if they dont know their levels.. but I live in the seattle area and am half hawaiian. When I had my level tested before I had my DD I was 19. The ND I saw then only put me on 2000 IUI and it was not near enough. DD was born in Jan in the dead of no daylight and flu season. Luckily I started working with a midwife shortly after that told me to up my Vit D to 10000 IUI a day. We tested 3 months later and I was only at 29. I took 20,000 IUI for 6 months and was able to get it up to 40. Then the sun kicked in and I was able to maintain 50 on 5,000 IUI. The winter hit again and we had to go back up to 10,000 IUI to maintain 60. My levels were tested at the beginning of this pregnancy and are at 59. Pregnancy does suck D out of you. I'd like them in the 70s or 80s so Im supplementing a 10,000 IUI gelcap and 10000 IUI in drops right now. The difference in my depression levels and how often I get sick when my levels were below 40 are like night and day.
My last mentor midwife tested all women and there wasnt a single one that was in levels in the 5 years she has been testing. Most women up here are CRITICALLY deficient with levels of less then 30. I cant tell you how many ladies came through with numbers in the teens. One poor hawaiian lady was at 7!!!! She had lived in hawaii her whole life and this was her first pregnancy in WA she had 4 other children. She came in at 6 weeks and said she just didnt know how she was going to do this.. was worried she had cancer or something because she was just so exhausted and depleted. This was a woman who had ran a half marathon at 7 months with her last baby and regularly surfed and snowboarded. Very active her whole life. Horrible morning sickness.. horrible antenatal depression. Midwife put her on 50,000 IUI and tested her levels in a month.. they had barely came up to the twenties.. switched method of delivery, no more gelcaps, but drops instead and they levels came up alot more. This lady had undiagnosed celiac and her intestines werent breaking down the gelcap efficiently. By the end of her first tri she was back to snowboarding. LOL. Her whole persona was more vivid. It was amazing to see.
Anyway, I guess my point is that I really think its hard to OD on Vitamin D if you live in a place that you get little sun or is at a latitude where even if you did you wouldnt make any vitamin d. I could lay out in my backyard naked all day if it was sunny and not make a single unit of D this time of year.
My husband is norwegian descent and his levels are in the 40s before supplementation in the winter, but his heritage makes him more efficient at getting D and storing it during the sunny times. He is a sailor and so during the summer his D levels go up into the 70s with minimal sun exposure.
Vitamin D deficiency is an epidemic and everyone should be tested.
Im singing the praises of D especially right now because my whole family is sick and Im not. That never happens, but I've been taking 20000IUI even when I cant take any other pills because of the morning sickness.
Speaking of morning sickness.. So thankful it is completely gone! I love the second trimester. Bigger movements these last few days and the food aversions are even getting less. Hubby took me out to dinner the other night and I had scallops. They were so tasty. Fish has been completely grossing me out and Im glad it's starting to sound okay again. Our refrigerator went out the day before hubby left.. luckily Home Depot delivered a snazzy new one I love the next day but it was depressing to have to throw out hundreds of dollars of food. Especially the healthy comfort foods that I had to go all the way to Seattle to get.
I am going to whine a little because my hubby has been gone since early friday and I miss him. He is on a cruise to celebrate his best friend of 25 years' 30th bday bparty. We have been together 10 years and this will be the longest we have ever been apart. He will be back late monday. We run a business together and always worked together when we didnt.. so, Im used to being with him 24/7. I never thought Id want to be around someone that much, but he is like a part of me and I just miss him terribly. I hate going to sleep at night without him. Poor DD wakes up every morning sad that he isnt here. He hid all these little presents around the house and every time I find one I just break down crying. My poor DD thinks mommy is having a breakdown. LOL. I do know that Im sooo soo soo thankful Im not a single parent. It is exhausting to not get any break.
Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend. I wont say the extra hour of sleep because people with young kids dont get that perk. LOL
