drjen~LOVE the birth story. And your T-day pics on FB are great! Oh! Can you change my marathon time when you update the race results list? I can't remember if I ever mentioned it here, but apparently the RnR people conceded that the course WAS in fact long, and the turnaround on that freaking overpass was nearly a tenth farther than it should have been! So they adjusted everyone's times...my new time is 4:54:53! I gained nearly 3 minutes!

Well, this day has been not-so-hot. It started off just fine...DS was in my bed around 2 am, but slept til nearly 8:30 (we were out past 10 last night). We had a nice, lazy morning, then headed to the Y for spin class. Where DS pooped his pants. Ugh. It was a mess. And I don't really get it, the kid has NEVER had a poop accident other than last year when he had the diarrhea bug for an afternoon. So I lost 20 minutes and half a Costco package of wipes cleaning that mess up, and still didn't get him clean. Luckily, they had a pull-up at the Y, or he would have been going home completely naked from the waist down. So then, we go to run by the bread outlet store, since we have none, and they're closed today. So THEN, we go to drop off the recycling (which completely fills up the back of my Grand Cherokee), and the recycling bin is locked down and there's a sign on it from the principal of the catholic school that it's at that it's no longer available for the public. irked.gif Oh, and a note to google "recycle denver" for somewhere else to go. Gee, thanks. So I have a vehicle full of recycling and nowhere to take it...hopefully, I can find a place tomorrow. Oh, and just to top it all off, I go to hang the outdoor lights this afternoon (we only have a balcony, so it's one lousy string of icicle lights) and there are at least 30 burned out bulb in my 12 foot string. I guess I get to brave Target tomorrow for a new string of lights. Sigh. And just for good measure, XH decided that he's not picking up DS tonight after all, but rather tomorrow morning instead. Grr.

Ok, enough complaining...time to start studying, yeehaw. rolleyes.gif

Hola!  I'm in southern Michigan at my sister's house. I come from a family of four girls, of which I am #2. We are at 1's house, I haven't seen her since 2005. Sister 3 is also here, we see her far more regularly (like almost every 6 months or so).  It is so strange to be here because, well, my lifestyle is so very different than my sister and her long time boyfriend. Both drink very heavily, smoke a ton. Boyfriend chews (ewww!). We are here for thanksgiving and random people keep showing up, totally drunk, expecting a keg party. One was so drunk last night when he arrived that they forced him to spend the night. Ish.  Thing that totally takes the cake of the whole crappy weekend:  we're playing bananagrams (dh, 3 and I). Everyone else is watching some r rated movie complete with chugging beer and naked girls. Get this: no one found it strange that my 5 year old was right there. In fact, when I went down the basement with her to get her away they were encouraging me to bring her back because the other 5 year old (we just met today) was watching and wondering where her new friend was. Argh. I'm so not a pursit: my kids eat mcdonalds occasionally, I watch tv, even trash tv sometimes. But come on: an r rated movie and a 5 year old?!!

redeeming part of the weekend: my sister 3 is part of the roller derby in detroit and they got my girls roller skates. We went to the rink today. Good times.

sorry for the lack of personals, thinking of you all.

ROTFLMAO.gifOMG Kerc, Im sorry you are having such a bad time but LOL that cracked me up

kerc ~ yikes!  That doesn't sound like fun at all.  But I have to agree with sparkle that your description is pretty comical.

Geo ~ that logic game looks like something Jacob would LOVE!

Thanksgiving has been lovely.  We didn't go anywhere, nor did we have any visitors, which I actually prefer.  Just the 5 of us having fun at home.  Dinner turned out great yesterday and today I turned the turkey carcass into the most delicous turkey/rice soup ever!  We also all went to the Y this morning where I ran 3 (in my new Dingo shirt), ellipticaled for 20 minutes and then did 10 minutes on the erg just for the heck of it.  This afternoon we saw Tangled and if you're not anti-Disney, I recommend it.  Everyone, even DH and DS really loved it.  DD2 cried when it was over because she wanted it to be longer LOL.

I agree JayGee, I took the girls to Tangled today and we all enjoyed it a lot.  I love the passive aggressive 'mother', they really nailed the script.

We just had a nice Indonesian dinner with friends (home-cooked) and now I feel like I need to find a source for lime leaf. :)

Oh, I did run today.  It was incredibly rainy.  Just a total can-barely-see-through-the-drops kind of rain and I wore gore tex pants and a rain slicker since I don't have any cool looking wet weather running gear.  I'm glad I went but I was so sleepy afterward.  Oy!

I wore my dingo shirt under it all though and that really kept me moving.

:)

kerc is having all the fun!

Our day was much like JG's but we did not go see a movie. It has been so nice to just be home instead of piling us all into the van and driving.

I need to run but it is cold and ds1 brought donuts home after doing papers. I am such a creature of habit and once I am knocked out of the usual it cn take forever to get back into a good groove. I never should have eaten a donut but they are so good as evidenced by them showing up on Christmas lists. eat.gif

DId you know if you switch editors you can type in smilie code?
Now I wish the email notices were more readable.

Had a truly lovely day yesterday.  Right after I post here, I went to the hospital, to greet my still-smiling labor client.  I've known her literally since I've lived here (in fact, met her while I was interviewing for the job here) and she has worked with most of the nurses at the hospital as well.  It was great to have a labor on the holiday - it was just 2 experienced nurses working, both knew my client well and were thrilled to get to take care of her, and there were no trainees (we're currently training 3 new nurses, which is also fun, but more work, and more explaining, and more having to stay on my toes and check everything they do.)  This way, she could just labor and we could just support her

Can I just tell you how this brought tears to my eyes? Any way you want to move to Louisville, so you can support me if I ever have more babies?

First ever official race on Thursday ... a 2 mile Turkey Trot. I went in not having any idea what to expect. Thank goodness I had a girlfriend with me, otherwise I might have high tailed it home.

Weather was awesome to start out - high 60s, but began to rain -- ended up completely drenched. Having my GF with me actually challenged me a bit, since she's not one to take any walking breaks. (I'm still in that mode) I only ended up walking about 30 seconds throughout the whole route (10 sec here and there). Had a huge stitch in my side at one point -- not sure what that's all about. (that's me, in the pink!)

I'm still in the rut of "why am I doing this again?" I don't really enjoy running, but I feel like it's a good exercise for me .... meaning it's cheap (no gym fees), convenient (no 20 min or more drive to the gym), good for my heart, lungs and bones, and should help me to lose some weight. (although at this point, I have yet to see any loss, which is frustrating)

I think I'm just in a mental block right now -- I was a bit frustrated with my time, because I felt like it was SO slow. There's a part of me that knows I shouldn't even be concerned about it, but it's so difficult not to compare yourself with others.

I'm hoping that some/a lot of you all have worked through this, and have some advice.

I switch back and forth the editors for smilies versus strike through.  A lot of the BBB code just doesn't work very well, and especially when replying to a quote, or worse, a quote within a quote.

I met C for a 5 mile run this morning, but when we hit campus, we decided to loop around all the crazy fans where were already there, bbqing and drinking before dawn.  It was 30F and windy.  Just not my kinda thing.  Then looping back once the sun was up, I started getting yelled at for wearing Michigan colors (bright yellow jacket, but black pants).  I alternated between yelling back "Go Cal Bears!" and "Go Columbus Crew" (soccer).  Such responses make little sense to drunken OSU fans, evidently.  All in all, it was 7.5 miles.  Doing it again with C (or at least the 5 mile loop) tomorrow.  This should at least make my 750 mile goal for 2010 in reach.

kerc, groan.  I wonder what kind of questions you'll be answering on your drive home.  Peace and strength.  How's sister 1 doing in the grand scheme of things?  It sounds like maybe things aren't greatly improved. :(

DiannaK, you look GREAT!  Congrats on finishing.  Sometimes running sucks, but it seems as though you're still doing a lot of the base condition that can be really, really hard.  Keep at it.  Find a buddy for a few of your runs each week.  It makes the time go so fast and is really motivating.  I don't lose weight from running.  I just don't.  I lose weight by not bringing money to work (and therefore no snacking) and bringing my own lunch (no greasy takeout).  Running tones, keeps my heart and lungs fit, keeps me sane, reduces my stress levels.  And lately, I'm finding that it battles insomnia.

If you're getting side stitches, slow down.  Running is a gait, not a pace, so you can still be running at a 14 minute mile.  Slow down and keep mixing walking into it until you can run 3 miles or 30 minutes in a row 3x a week.  Only after you do that for a few weeks should you even start to pay attention to the time.

Kerc is wise. nod.gif

I have lost weight from running as a lifestyle; I don't tend to gain if I skip a few weeks, and I do gain a bit when I'm ramping up my mileage because I get hungry. But I did lose 15+ pounds a couple of years ago when I both increased my mileage *and* significantly improved my diet. I haven't continued to lose - I'm now within a 5lb range the vast majority of the time - but my weight is stable at I'm very fit. And yes, on the battling insomnia and stress.

Today's RR - a nice 7 miles in gorgeous weather. 9:30 miles which feels like a good pace for me. I think if the weather stays decent and/or I use the treadmill I can get back to a 10m long run again by the end of the year.

Must keep grading, although I've made a *ton* of progress. Am reading Kathleen Norris's Acedia & Me, and it's interesting so far - I'm deeply interested in religious vs. psychological responses to depression, which is mostly what it's about, although lots of the book feels like it's rehashing of her other writing.

Off to shower.... happy Saturday, Dingo mamas!

Great picture, DiannaK!  It took me a while to "love" running.  Keep at it and you'll get there.

I had a nice 3 mile run this morning.  I never run with music, but decided to take DH's ipod with me today.  It's amazing how my pace changes with the music.  For example, monster rock ballads (ie. Love Hurts) yield a slow 11:30 pace.  Toby Mac's "Get Back up Again" had me cookin' home at 7:45 min/mi!  It was perfect running weather ~ a cool 39 degrees and overcast.  DH is trying to squeeze as much soccer as he can out of his last few weekends home.  He went straight to the indoor field for a game before even coming home on Wednesday night and is there again today for another game.  Afterwards he's taking the older 2 to the climbing gym and DD2 and I are headed to Kohl's to buy me some pants since all of mine have decided to blast through the knees at the same time.

Simply put, he's chewed all the fur off and it's raw on a patch about 2" x 4" in size.   Is there a topical cream or anything i can put on my dog's hind end to alleviate his scratching? TIA!

Are you sure it's fleas and not allergies? My grandparents dog did this and it was allergy related, he had to have shots regularly to get him to leave it alone. If it is fleas, I recommend bathing him weekly with dawn that will get rid of the fleas.

Holy crap! Sorry your holiday has been so crappy.

No run today, but I did get in a 29 mile bike ride. I can never keep up with you ladies! Is it that there are so many dingoes or there are talkative dingoes :) I agree the smilie issue is bothering me. And congrats DianaK!

kerc, my extended family get-togethers are like that. Have a safe drive home.

Didn't run (again) today, but dh and I did totally reconfigure the chicken pens in the barn, which involved a lot of chipping, shoveling and wheelbarrow loads of the dustiest poo you might ever care to imagine. Yuck. I'm roasting a bread stuffing for a friend's Thanksgiving dinner we're going to later...ww bread, onions, celery, butternut squash, mushrooms, butter and eggs. Lots of home-grown goodies in there!

DiannaK, Geo is right. Build the base, let all those good reasons for running keep you running, and soon you will enjoy! Running was a weight loss tool for me, and still is, but it is part of a holistic approach. To maintain a healthy weight, I have to do it all--sleep well, eat carefully, manage stress, weight train, core train and cardio. I run better when I also ride a bike, and as a severe overpronator, I need to be careful not to overdo it all the time. What I find is, when I run regularly, I also tend to eat less junk, eat less for comfort, sleep better, feel nicer and act kinder, and generally have a better life. Even 5 years into it, I'm right now not even bothering to note my times. Notably, when I take care to do my strengthening exercises, I run faster. nod.gif

Going to try getting dh to sign off on a SPA DAY tomorrow! Cross-training always does the trick...mischievous.gif

Holy dizzy.gif, kerc!

Great picture, DiannaK! thumb.gif

Thank you, thank you, thank you mommajb, for figuring out the editors/smilies thing!!! bow.gif

Pharm test done, now it's time to buckle down to study for med-surg. And I am having extreme difficulty. I have given up on all healthy behaviors today in an effort to just make it through the next four days. So, no run today, potentially no run tomorrow (depending on how today's studying goes). Mainlining caffeine in the form of Starbucks and Pepsi. Stopped at Little Caesar's for some crazy bread, because it sounded good, was cheap, and easier than actually *gasp* fixing myself something to eat. Oh, and I may have picked up some cheetos at the grocery store to fuel the studyfest. bag.gif

DiannaK~Just over 3 years ago, I HATED running. Hated it, I tell ya! I got talked into a sprint triathlon, so I started "running", just enough to get by. I got hooked by triathlon, and decided to keep going with it. Then I found the dingos, got persuaded into running a half-marathon...before I knew it, I had gone from hating running to disliking running to tolerating running to kind of liking running to NEEDING running. I still won't say that I love it, but countless sprint and olympic triathlons, five half-marathons, two half-ironmans, and two full marathons...I can definitely say that I need it. I might like cycling better, but running is almost always quicker, more convenient, and more bang for my buck (calorie-burning wise). Keep it up, you never know where you'll end up! orngbiggrin.gif

The Eagles predicted the dingos decades ago.  It's so obvious:

On a dark desert highway (with appropriate lighting and reflective gear, of course), cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of sweat, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the port-o-let
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the Garmin chirp
And I was thinking to myself,
’this could be heaven or this could be hell’
Then she congratulated my run and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...
