Have you ever come across the word ‘Smoker’s face’? This is a new word that has been added to the dictionary recently. Chain smokers develop a dull appearance which is the literal meaning of smoker’s face.

A person with a smoker’s face has lines or wrinkles on the face, which typically radiate at right angles from the upper and lower lips or corners of the eyes, deep lines on the cheeks, or numerous shallow lines on the cheeks and lower jaw. The underlying bony contours become more prominent and the face develops a subtle gauntness. Sometimes the smokers develop a leathery, worn or rugged appearance. The face develops an atrophic, slightly pigmented grey appearance of the skin. Some people also develop a plethoric, orange, red and purple complexion. The changes in the color and quality of the skin are not only a symptom of age but also a suggestion of a toxic process.

The toxins in cigarette smoke are absorbed directly into the bloodstream and are supplied to the skin structure. Smoking interferes with the efficiency with which the skin regenerates itself. Smoking narrows the blood vessels and reduces blood supply to the skin. This in turn reduces the supply of oxygen and the removal of waste products like dead cell fragments become slow. Removal of waste is necessary for regeneration. The level of collagen in the skin is also reduced. Research shows that smoking a single cigarette produces cutaneous vasoconstriction, which is the decrease in the caliber of blood vessels.

It is not only necessary to find out the most suitable Way to quit smoking but also to follow it with dedication and sincerity.
