In May, I had a dental check up where the dentist found a cracked amalgam filling. I've been told it needs to come out or I will get decay in/around it. I've obviously been stalling, but have been to another dentist now who is telling me the same. It doesn't hurt.
I'm breastfeeding DS who is 19 months old and still an avid nurser. I'm extremely nervous about mercury and proper removal protocols. My dentist will use a rubber dam and a vacuum to suck up mercury. What other precautions are necessary? How much mercury is being released right now due to the crack? Is it best to fix it now or wait? I'd like to get pregnant again in the next year or so, and don't foresee a break between nursing and pregnancy, so I don't think I can wait for that.
Also, I have another amalgam filling right next to the cracked one. Since I've started looking into all of this, I'm now worried about the mercury in that one too! If I'm taking care to get one out, should I get the other one out at the same time? My dentist will only do the cracked one, she says she won't mess with perfectly good fillings. But that's also been on my mind...
I'd love personal thoughts and experiences, but references I could bring to my dentist would help too. I had an appointment yesterday for other fillings and she was asking about when I'm doing the cracked one. I felt a bit overwhelmed and pressured in trying to explain why I'm nervous, so having more to back me up would be great!
