I'm a SAHM to an almost one-year-old. I finished grad school right before he was born, and planned to take time off to be a SAHM for the foreseeable future. We are doing fine financially.
A job has opened up in my field that I'm over-qualified for and pretty confident I could get, and I can't stop thinking about it. It's a library assistant position in the children's department of a local library, and I have an MLIS. It's part time, pays decently but the money would be secondary. Basically it'd be a chance for me to work in my field doing something I love, while getting a bit of adult time to boot.
The listing says that it's "primarily Saturdays and Sundays with occasional weekday hours." The catch is that I'd only be able to do it on the weekends, as we have no other childcare and DH works M-F 9-5. As much as I think the job could be a good thing, I'm not willing to find childcare for random shifts during the week.
So, finally, my question - do I apply and discuss my schedule during the interview? It seems disingenuous to apply when I can't meet the stated requirements (the occasional weekday hours), but it's so casual/part-time that maybe it's not a big deal. Do I apply and say somewhere on the application or cover letter that I can only do weekends? Or do I try to contact someone in the department to see if they would consider hiring someone who couldn't work during the week? I think I'm leaning towards the second option, but it has been a long tine since I've applied for a job and I'm not sure.
Thanks!
