Gasping for air - normal or not?

I've caught my LO in a few brief 'unable to breathe followed by stacatto-like-chokey-inhale followed by crying' episodes lately. It scares me. It often happens when she is lying down, but not always. I've heard gurgling noise just beforehand so I'm thinking it is reflux. She goes for a check-up in 2 weeks, but I wanted to know what you ladies thought about this and if there was anything I should do about it.

TIA

mine did that - it turned out to be reflux causing laryngospasms. not fun. he was just 5 weeks though, so it may not be the same as your little one is much older now.

My daughter did this too, and it peaked around 4 and 5 months. She mostly did it while in the cradle swing, and it would just scare the living heck out of me and DH. It sounded like reflux too. Thankfully, it gradually went away. She is 7 months old and I can't remember the last time it happened. She never seemed like she was in any pain so we didn't take her to a doctor. I'd consider taking your baby to the doctor, or at least calling the doctor to see if you should take her in. They might be able to help her with that.

PatioGardener -- how did you diagnose this? My 5 week old does it too, along with sputtering & hiccups and milk has even come through his nose. I neglected to mention these extra symptoms at my well visit (along with chomping and sometimes spit up), & doc said before treating for reflux he would recommend trying probiotics. How did you treat?

We saw an ear nose and throat specialist after the family doctor freaked out when he saw an episode. The ENT took a complete history and did a quick scope. Before trying Prevacid (which works SO well for my DS) we also changed sleeping position (at an angle), did upright feeds, upright for 30 min after a feed, I worked on my massive over supply (I was already dairy and soy free from an earlier reaction), probiotics and chiro for the babe. I think that all really helped, but we needed medication too.

Yeahhhh that sounds like my current littlest. SHe was diagnosed with VERY severe reflux, ended up in the hospital for a week when she was only a week old!!! She's on Prevacid and an apnea monitor now. She has silent reflux as well, and she's had several apnea episodes that scared the hell outta me. And I totally understand the freaking out over milk spewing out the nose, we've done that too. It's a little more under control with the Prevacid, but not completely. We know she's MSPI at the least, and we're watching it closely.

Good luck, I'm sorry
