Does this sound like a kidney infection?

From what I've read online, the symptoms don't seem quite typical of a kidney infection, but I'm at a loss and I can't decide whether this is something I should wait and see on, or whether I need to get to a doctor (which is what I would do if I really believed that it was a kidney infection.)

Anyway, not sure if this is relevant, but about two weeks ago, I had some nasty flu-like virus (high fever, sore throat, chills, aches, VERY swollen lymph nodes in neck). It passed after about 5 days, with just a runny nose as a reminder. I still have the runny nose, by the way.

So about 5 days ago, I started getting this achy pain in my lower back, in about the area I imagine would be kidney zone. It was not excruciating, stabbing pain: it was a dull ache, but definitely bothersome. Sometimes the ache would also be felt in my lower abdomen. In addition, complete loss of appetite. No fever.

Since it seemed kidney-like, I bought an over OTC UTI/bladder infection test which looks for protein and nitrate in the urine. It came back negative for both.

Today, however, (excuse the TMI), my urine looked a little bubbly, which I understand is a sign of protein in the urine (and hence a sign of kidney issues).

The pain is still mild to moderate, achy, no fever. It doesn't seem to have gotten any worse, but it hasn't really gotten much better, either. And I still have no appetite. I've been living on juice. Which can't be helping matters.

Any thoughts? Does this sound like a kidney infection, or could it just be the previous illness still working its way through my system?

Hope I can help you!!! I have had some similar symptoms, the no appetite, dull achy in back and spreading to joints feeling... then I also had some pressure in lower abdomen. I actually tested positive for UTI, and went through two rounds of antibiotics, but it kept coming back. Just today I went to health food store (after finding out about this on internet) and got something called d mannose, which is a natural sugar and acts like cranberry, binding with the bacteria so that it can be flushed out. But honestly, IT IS AMAZING!!! I would run, not walk, to store and get some at the slightest thought of it being a kidney infection. In a few hours I felt better than I have in WEEKS!!! I have seen it mentioned in a few posts here and there, but I feel like it is a miracle pil!! It is literally doing what antibiotics couldnt do for me. I know the true test will be when I go off it, to see if it comes back again... but in the meantime I just want to get the word out about this stuff!!

d mannose
Thanks! I haven't heard of that. I will check my local "alternative pharmacy" today--hopefully, I'll be able to find some there and give it a try

Have your urine checked for blood. You might have kidney stones.

That crossed my mind, too. But wouldn't the pain be worse? I know people who have had stones and they described it as agonizing, which I wouldn't say this is.

I picked up some d mannose this afternoon with my fingers crossed. The dosing is crazy, though: five tablets every three to four hours you're awake! I'm going to be popping pills all day

I am on my day 2 of it, and I feel good, can go through my normal activities... but it's still there. Have a doc appt tmrw. I am actually taking more than my bottle says (3 tabs 3x a day). I googled "too much d mannose" and I dont think it's possible to OD since it is a natural sugar. I will present my situation to doc. Am glad I wont be in agony every moment as I wait for lab results, etc. though. But I feel I shouldnt need to pop these things so often for too many days....makes me nervous... and you really dont want to play games with kidney issues. I think in your case, the best thing will be that if your symptoms respond to it, you'll know it is UTI related. Still not sure if it is strong enough to really kick it out of your system though. Please do keep us updated!! I will do same.

That's what I thought, too when I finally gave up and saw a doctor this weekend. It's more of an ache than agonizing pain. A CT scan revealed at least three stones one of them on the larger side. Turns out women often experience kidney stones differently than men.

I'm glad you're seeing a doctor tomorrow. Have them check your urine for blood. It's easy and non-intrusive.

Well, my labs came back normal, and pressure /symptoms are gone... so maybe the d-mannose headed it off at the pass! yay!! Hope you're doing better too, EVC!!

Well, I went to the doc yesterday. Based on the exam, he seemed to think it was likely something neuro-muscular going on. He pressed on an area on my lower back which sent a shooting pain through me and seemed to confirm his suspicions. He did take urine for analysis just to be sure there was no additional infection--I should get the results later today. So we'll see...

It was an interesting visit, though--when I described the symptoms of my recent "flu like illness" he said it sounded like I had mono, which never even occurred to me. So that might explain why I'm still generally feeling a bit "off" even though the other symptoms have resolved. He mentioned that mono is one of those illnesses that tend to be much milder in children, but much worse in adults, which explains why dd didn't seem to be hit as hard as I was. He compared it to chicken pox. When I mentioned that cp worries me a bit for that reason (because I never had it as a child and dd is unvaxed), he drew blood for a titers test. I was so psyched--I had thought about doing that, but always assumed it would be complicated or really expensive, but apparently my insurance covers it. Yay!

So waiting on the results of the urinalysis....
