4th grade social studies....don't know where to start

I am going to be looking for a 4th Grade Social studies curriculum soon.

She has been working on Switched on School House for most of the year. She doesn't like their Social Studies (and we were less than impressed) that came with Switched on Schoolhouse and we are going to try to move away from the majority of it and maybe just keep Language Arts and Bible.

I work at home and Switched on School house has been good because I can answer her questions as needed and grade work later if I'm busy.

I think I've found math and science curriculum in book form that will allow her to work some what independently.

Is there a Social Studies curriculum like this? She prefers to work independently. I think she might enjoy something more literature based....

Any suggestions?

My 5th grader is using Pandia Press Ancient II pretty much independently!

My son loves Story of the World audio books. Our library has them. He listens to them and plays with legos. And he remembers so much of it. Story of the World has an activity book with projects to go along with the program, but we just use the audio books. Alot depends on if you want to cover state history, your country history, and then world history in that order, or whether you want to work chronologically and cover your specific areas as they come up in history. Once you know what time period/location you want to cover, you can choose historical fiction books from then to supplement. Here's one list of books to choose from.

I was going to recommend Story of the World as well. I would start her out in year 1 if you haven't used it before, as it goes through history chronologically.

we also use abeka history. yes, i know that sounds totally awful & dry, and i usually hate abeka stuff. but the history is just a book of biographies and is written at my daughter's reading level (she is in 3rd grade). we are really enjoying it very much, and i easily add in other living books that follow the same topic. i am planning to use grade 4 history as well. it's christian obviously, but i assume if you used SOS and teach bible that you're okay with that. hth.
