Im sitting here in tears so irritated. I wanted a homebirth so badly with this baby but I just cant seem to swing it. Did I mention I hate NC with a passion? Im about 12 weeks pregnant and I have been putting seeing a dr. off because I was trying to work stuff out. Now Im to the point where I need to be seen. Im with tricare so I have to see a dr. before I get a referal to the OB. Its going to take me more than a week to get it to be seen (it was going to be two weeks!) Does anyone know what they do to give the referal? I know bloodwork but I am not agreeing to any pelvis exams. I dont know what Im mgoing to do if they cant give me a referal unless I have an exam. Im freaking out cause it already seems like the control is out of my hands and after two births I hated Im so bummed.

I'm in NC as well and while some of the laws are janky it's fully possible to have a beautiful, intervention free birth at home.

Why can't you have a home birth?

Can't you call the doctor and ask what will be required of you? I've never had an issue when declining a pap, FWIW.

I asked the nurse numerous times and she said they normally do bloodwork but sometimes he chooses not to but they should do it. Thats about the only answer I got.

I am in a tricky area and I have been looking for about 8 weeks for a midwife and have not found anything. The closest I can find is about 3 hours away but with my son I was only in labor for 2 hours so thats not a risk I want to take. My husband wont agree to an unassisted. So Im pretty much backed into a corner.

Have you searched here?

http://birthpartners.com/

Called the nearest midwives to you and asked for a referral to someone closer? Contacted local doulas for the same? Anyone in or near your community that is natural birth friendly may provide an answer. It's often done in a hushed manner in NC.

If it'll ease your mind give your doc another call, ask to speak with him/her directly and demand answers (kindly, of course!)

Sorry you're having such a rough time

When I got my referral, it was only bloodwork. I went to the GP doc (on base, but there were no OBs on base) and he sent me over to the lab for a blood draw. That was it. They called me a few days later with confirmation I was pregnant and asked what OB I wanted to see.

I wasn't interested in seeing a MW at that time in my life, so I can't help you with that. I paid out of pocket for my last two births (both HBACs) even though we still have Tricare.

Take a deep breath...

You don't have to have a single pelvic exam during your entire pregnancy, even if you have an OB. All you have to do is say, "no thank you." You have rights as a patient, and the military is BIG on patient rights.

In my experience at a MTF, it's just bloodwork to get things started.

Tricare Prime is supposed to pay for hb. if you can get a referal from your primary care doc, it's 100%. You can drop down to Standard and it's 70% (whatever the standard share is) and even if you stay on Prime, birth is considered emergency care and they will pay 50 or 60% of that cost. You need to speak with someone at Tricare. Call the 800 number and ask to speak with a supervisor if the cs rep doesn't have any info for you. Don't go to the tricare office on base, or try to get info on this from the MTF. They are not going to be supportive of your decision any more than a regular hospital is going to be. Dig around on your own and you very well may be able to find a military doc who is supportive enough to write you a referral. Check in FYT here, check at local LLL meetings, and local natural parenting groups.

Good Luck!

Banana, I have heard that tricare will pay for a little bit of homebirth but only if its with a cnm and I cannot find any around me. At this point I cant even find a cpm anywhere within an hour except for in VA but I am about 15 miles from the VA line and because of the laws in NC Im guessing they wont come into NC to deliver. I am not being seen by military drs. at all just a doctor in town that I have never seen before.

I would speak with tricare directly and see what they have to say.
