Anyone switched to hs after multiple illnesses?

dd3 started pre-k in mid august. three days after school started, she got her first cold and has pretty much been sick since. the baby and i have also been sick this whole time. i'm just wondering if keeping her home will help? she was bf until 26.5 mos and dd4 is still bf, but i guess the superbugs are just dragging us down.

sorry for the intrusion, but i am desparate for well children!

We switched to AVOID illnesses because ds has a mild immune deficiency. We don't regret it.

Ds was sick with one thing after the other for the 6 weeks he was in pre-k. He went back to his normal health after we withdrew him from school. That wasn't the reason for our decision to hs but it sure was a welcome benefit.

I did not switch because of the illness, but we did notice a DRASTIC decrease in illness when we stopped school. The year she went, she missed 40 days of school, she was sick CONSTANTLY, needed nebulizer treatments for her asthma at least 2X per week, ALL winter long..it was an awful, awful nightmare. The next year....she needed a nebulizer treatment...ONCE the entire winter, had a few normal colds which resolved quickly...it was literally a night and day difference.

Yep, that's us. a bit over 3yrs ago my now 8yo started K and was sick CONSTANTLY. Literally weekly he was home with a vomitting bug, then it moved on to sinus and lower respiratory infections...probably 2 weeks out of 4 I actually was called to collect him early due to sudden illness. His teacher was very happy when I decided to hs him half way through the year, because one day he got SO sick and just waned before her eyes. After the last time I got called to come get him, and had to have dh bring the car home to me, I said ENOUGH! and withdrew him that afternoon.

It has worked out very well for us and his illnesses have been cut WAY back.. he may have been sick half a dozen times in the last 3yrs (that's not counting every dribbly nose or complaint of a tummy ache that results in nothing obviously )

Not us, but lately I've been wondering how public schooling parents handle illness when their child is missing lots of school. Normally my kids are really healthy compared to most other kids, but this year has SUCKED! We all came down with pertussis in early August and we are still coughing. I can't imagine how much school they would have missed by this point, then of course they got croup last week ,so it would be more missed time! I think if my kids were in public school I'd be ready to pull them at this point because I'd be so stressed about them missing school and trying to make up work and sending them when they're not very ill but still would rather be at home in bed, etc.

The illness thing would be a big issue for me as I have very poor health when it comes to my asthma, I simply cannot risk having my kids bring home every bug at school because a cold for them quite often turns into bronchitis, pneumonia and even collapsed lung for me.

My 3rd child was just diagnosed with a severe peanut allergy and we carry an epi pen for him. Personally, I will never consider sending him to public school, I would never feel safe doing that.

thank you all for the stories and help! we are still deciding what to do as dh is very adamant about her going to public and i'm sort of on the fence. oh, and THANK YOU for no judgment! my other kids are going to stay in public, their choice as they are older and i let them have a say.

Ya'd think he'd be okay with it for a while until your little's immune system sures up (I think they hit an immunological milestone around 7 or 8yo) being that you're not looking to pull the older ones out...?

It's likely the local district would work with you on keeping your smallest one on the same pace as their classmates if that would make your dh feel better. And it is certainly WAY less time for you to do that one-on-one than for them to be in the classroom. When I did home instruction at high school level, the district estimated that any high school grade's full week of curriculum could be covered in 4 hours.

I know that my school district offers a digital academy option, where the child is enrolled in the district and they give curriculum and assign a teacher that meets with the child once a week or something, but you do the teaching at home and all the curriculum follows the pace of the school. Does your district offer an option like that? It may be a way to compromise with your dh since he isn't as on board about it, and transitioning later to the ps again won't be so difficult since you'll know that your child is still on track with their curriculum.

My daughter was enrolled at a preschool from Jan to May last year. She was supposed to attend two days a week, and I don't think she was even there half the time because she was always getting sick. I actually took her in for bloodwork because I was so concerned. It wasn't the reason we decided to HS, but it's definitely a perk to HSing.
