well, crap....another SIL is pregnant

My dh's brother's wife is 8 weeks pregnant. Oh, I fear for her son if she has one. I am hoping for a girl!

At Thanksgiving 2002, when ds was still a little baby, the circumcision issue came up and this SIL allowed as how the foreskin is gross and disgusting. : So I know she already has an opinion on the matter, and BIL is of course circed just as my dh is.

I am going to hold off until they have an ultrasound before sending them anything. I don't think it will do any good to start in now, as I doubt she'll be receptive.

OTOH, her best friend left her son intact (best friend's dh is Swedish) so maybe best friend's influence will be positive.

And don't even get me started on how non-AP these two are likely to be....I don't think they'll hit and yell, just leave the kids to be raised by nannies as they continue their high-powered, high-earning, social butterfly lifestyles. (I hope they surprise me but I'm prepared to be disappointed, particularly on the circumcision and breastfeeding fronts.)

That sucks. Well we can pray she either has a girl or a change or heart!

I have a sil that thinks its necessary religiously even though I've shown her that its not.
I think I will have dh work with his brother on it when they get pregnant. She seems like she will be an awesome mom (anti CIO, CDs, waterbirth, but a crib though ) so I'm sure once she understands she will change her mind.
Do you think your dh could talk to his bro?

Djibouti, Ethiopia and Eritrea, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan (North), Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Chad, CĂ´te d'Ivoire, Egypt, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria and Togo probably think an uncircumcised clitoris is gross and disgusting.

The operation is forced on approximately 6,000 girls per day, worldwide -- about one every 15 seconds. Since FGM is practiced when the girls are young, they are unable to give their informed consent.
Quote:
In some areas of Africa, FGM is delayed until two months before a woman gives birth. This practice is based on the belief that the baby will die if she/he comes into contact with their mother's clitoris during birth. We are unaware of any medical evidence to support this belief.
Quote:
The clitoris is dangerous and must be removed for health reasons. Some believe that it is a poisonous organ, that can cause a man to sicken or die if contacted by a man's penis. Others believe that men can become impotent by contacting a clitoris, or that a baby will be hydrocephalic (born with excess cranial fluid) if its head contacts the clitoris during birth. Some believe that the milk of the mother will become poisonous if her clitoris touches the baby during childbirth.
They also believe that:
  • Bad genital odors can only be eliminated by removing the clitoris and labia minora.
  • FGM prevents vaginal cancer.
"These claims appear to have little support outside of countries where FGM is common."

Circumcision of the Female
"If the male needs circumcision for cleanliness and hygiene, why not the female? The procedure is easy. The same reasons that apply for the circumcision of males are generally valid when considered for the female."
