trouble with sewing

So, I'm trying to sew elastic onto fleece. The first half went fine then my machine would make kind of a slamming noise and the spool on top would spin the opposite direction and the bobbin thread is all crazy and like way too much thread coming out all bunched up. What am I doing wrong???

Have you tried re-doing your bobbin? Sometimes my machine does that when my bobbin didn't wind properally. Also check your needle and thread tension. Check with your manual to make sure you are using the right type/size needle and tension for what you are doing. Also try cleaning the bobbin housing area see if there isn't a ton of dust/thread etc caught up down there. Replace the needle just in case there is a problem with it (I tend to find my needle starts "going" after 6-8 hours of sewing even if it doens't break/bend theres benefit in replacing it)

I would never have thought to change the needle since it hasn't broken. Thanks for the tips. I'll try those and see if it helps!

You may need a different type of needle. My machine Will.Not.Sew anything heavier than regular cotton without a needle specially meant for knits and heavier stuff.

Also, bits of fleece may have gotten into your bobbin casing. Take it all apart and make sure. The last time I had major trouble, I finally checked the bobbin casing and found all sorts of dustbunnies in there, as well as a half of a pin.

Thanks. I haven't even had a chance to get my machine out again. I plan on taking it all apart, clean it, and check the bobbin.

I swear, 99% of the time I have trouble my machine it is a bobbin problem. If the thread is all bunched up on the bottom of the fabric it's a bobbin issue.
