Memorable conversations about homebirth

The thread about what to say when people ask about your birthplans had some fun stories in it about conversations people have had about HB, and I thought it would be fun to read and share more.

When I was pregnant with DS, I was in nursing school, and our clinical instructor, who loved to give his students a hard time, was always directing comments to me about how pregnancy is "pathological," and childbirth is a "medical procedure." I would usually debate with him about how pregnancy is a normal condition of the human body, and how childbirth is meant to be a normal and natural procedure of the human body. He threw this one at me "If childbirth is not a medical procedure, then why do women give birth in hospitals?" My classmates, who knew of my plans, started laughing, as I responded, "I don't know! Why do they? I'm certainly not going to take the risks associated with manageing the birth of my child as if it were medical procedure."

We were at lunch with my in-laws on the day of one of our midwife interviews. They asked if we wanted to go to a bookstore after lunch and DH responded that we had to get back home to interview our midwife. MIL responded with, "I don't know why you just don't use a doctor how can you know if your midwife is good? At least with a doctor you don't have to interview them." I made the mistake of actually responding (instead of letting DH handle it!) and said, "Oh, I *always* interview my doctors. Some doctors made As but some were at the bottom of the class." MIL said, "I've never heard of that. I've never done that," and looked at me like I was crazy.

It just makes me chuckle...

I had a conversation like this with a friend the other day! He said something to the effect that with an OB you'd have a basic level of trust in their judgment because the OB "at least has some medical training"...like midwives just wake up one morning and decide to start catching babies

So I referred him to myobsaidwhat.com to get an eyeful of some of the quackery that comes with choosing the wrong OB

When I was pregnant for my first, my former partner's mother asked me if the midwife would give me a c-section at home if I needed one... I guess she thought a home birth means you won't transfer to the hospital no matter what happens?
