EBF for One Solid Year?

Anyone EBF for a solid year (no solids)?

What did you find it was like.
Did you try and do this with a baby who was very grabby and into everything? hehe (Did it work out okay?)
Did you find BF them different after 6 months (with no solids) than before?
How did/do you find others reactions to this?
What were your reasons?

I would like to make it to a year of EBF. At least 9 months if I fail that. I can only see this not working because I have a 5 year old son and a small house with a very grabby baby nearly very mobile! He is a few weeks over 6 months now and so far so good! (though I have to watch paper too as he swallowed a piece one! )...

I had/have been doing a bit of reading (not that there is much out there) about gut flora and nutrience and the way it is recieved from a baby, etc. - and have decided that it really is best to hold off on solids for awhile longer. Mostly because there really are not many solids out there (yet) that are worth replacing BM with at this time in our lives - and once he has solids, that will change his gut flora and how he takes in the nutrience from BM. So - I am going to try and hold off for a year. Will be an interesting journey!

So - I would love to hear from others who did this as well!

Hi there,

I had intended to do this and only made it to about 7 1/2 mos, as DD was starting to go *crazy* when she saw DH and I eating. I, too, was nervous about replacing BM with anything else, but it became apparent very quickly that there was no replacing going on when she started solids. I'd say at best for the first 4 months it was just about exploring textures; she would maybe get in 1 or 2 "bites" of smushed avocado. It turned out that it just wasn't her preference to start going crazy eating solids, but she definitely wanted the option of sitting in her chair with us at meal times and playing with food while we ate.

I have only dropped a nursing session in the past month (she's 14 mos now); otherwise she is nursing as often as she did when she started eating solids - only now, she eats a little more solid food in addition to it. I had mixed feelings about giving her solids earlier than 1 year, but ultimately decided to follow her lead (as we have with all other developmental milestones).

Good luck!

My mom EBF me for a whole year! That was almost 30 years ago now. She said she did that because it was recommended to do that (by her doctor? not sure), but this had changed by the time my sister came along a couple years later. I guess you should talk to my mom, haha! Now that I'm bf, I'm starting to understand how big a commitment it was for her to do that.
