I know alot of mamas here are taking increased amounts of Vit D but are you also increasing your vit C? I think my prenatal only has like 85mg...I do supplement but I was curious what others are doing....

I do supplement. I take an extra 500mg of vit c daily. I have read some articles recently that say that there's no benefit to taking extra vit c but I do because I believe it does keep me healthy and I know there's no danger to taking it.

I was wondering about this as well. I'm taking 4000 mg of vit D and I definitely want to avoid the flu if I can.

My acupuncturist says not more than 2,000 units of Vitamin C a day when pregnant. Which stinks b/c I usually take a ton of it when I feel something coming on.

If you are trying to prevent the flu, check out Washington Homeopathics (www.homeopathyworks.com). They have a remedy called Influenzium. It can be taken when you feel the flu coming on OR it can be taken as a preventative - 3 pills in one day once every 2 weeks. They take the strains from the flu shot and put it into the remedy. It apparently has the H1N1 strains in it too. They come out w/ a new one each year w/ the current strains.

My doctor also said not more than 2000 and only take 2000 for limited time (like when already sick and trying to get better) otherwise 1000 per day should be fine (higher amounts are linked to problems, but 1000-2000 are linked to not having PROM)

FWIW I never took it with my first two but craved orange juice like crazy with them (as well as a few other Vit. C rich foods) but this time around I took it and did not crave them.

All three times, water did not break until at most 15 minutes before baby was here... this most recent time it was about 3 minutes before. Just before I started pushing (I apparently have a very roomy pelvis and do not have to push much for any of my babies)

My MW recommended that I eat high Vit C foods or take a suppliment because it can help strengthen the amniotic sac. My water broke with DS and I think we're trying to prevent THAT starting labor.

I had never even heard that it was not a good idea to take high amounts of vitamin C while pregnant. I am taking 1000mg per day, which is what I always take.

I've never heard of that it wasn't a good idea to take high amounts either...I take 4-6000mg a day while pregnant...mostly to help my varicose veins as Vit C makes a big difference for them.

If you check out the vitamin C foundation there is an article where a doc gave pg women anywhere from 3000-6000mg (i think those were the numbers) of it and all had amazing pregnancies/births and very healthy babies...

My nutritionist suggested that I take 1000 3x/day plus what I get in my food.  Said it's good for ligaments and tendons as well.  Will talk to my OB or Midwife when I finally find one.

Vitamin C in VERY large amounts (several grams) *early* in pregnancy can be a problem.  It can cause the corpus luteum to deteriorate resulting in a fall in progesterone and miscarriage.  Since vitamin C is water soluble and your body gets rid of the extra in your urine I don't see the point in taking more than a few hundred to 1000 mg.  Its not going to stick around.
