Let's Talk Turkey!

I haven't been to this forum in ages although I come to MDC nearly every day.

What kind of turkey are you buying this year?

Where do you purchase it?

Do you have to order ahead of time?

Last year, we ordered ahead of time from a small butcher and got the best turkey any of us has ever tasted. It was pricey, but we planned ahead and used every little bit of that bird. It was as local as we can get and it was organic, but I don't recall any of the other details. I would like a heritage breed this year and preferably free-range. I've been to localharvest.org and cannot find any suppliers in my county. I need ideas....

Thanks!

We have a really good natural foods co op here that is always well stocked with free range and organic turkeys of varying types (fresh, frozen, local, ect). So I am going to just go and pick the best one I can within my payment abilities. They do usually have a way you can order heritage birds, but that is not typically something I can afford.

This will be an interesting T day for us. My parents are coming for the first time ever. They live very far and usually only travel here in summer (they are afraid of bad weather while traveling). I warned them that I was planning on having a turkey, because they are vegetarians I didn't want to them to be grossed out (or think I would do a veggie only day). Anyway, my mom totally shocked me by indicating that she could probably would have some turkey just this once.

So the pressure is on! I mean, if they are only going to eat meat every ten years, I surely want to do a good job of it.

I think this will be the fourth or fifth year running that I've sprung for a bird from Good Shepherd Ranch. They've all been fantastic, but it really comes down to the AWA seal.

DH was hoping to get one hunting but apparently there is no fall turkey hunt this year. So we had to order a heritage breed turkey this year.

We usually get a Bell and Evans turkey for Thanksgiving. From what I am told, they are only available this time of the year. They are fresh, well taken care of, and always delish! We have to order ahead of time.

Thanks for the ideas! I'll be researching these later today.
