Piddle pads

Thread Starter
My daughter has just moved into underpants. I am concerned she is going to have an accident in her carseat (the recaro--PITA to remove/wash the cover). I know you're not supposed to put after-market things in a carseat in general, but I would like your thoughts on the safety of these pads.

I can certainly get her into a pullup (well, we don't have any but I could buy some, I guess) or diaper for a long drive, it's the around-town ones that worry me.

Thanks in advance

I would use a sunshine kids dry seat, ONLY in a sunshine kids carseat (radian)

Otherwise, use something like a cloth diaper, chux pad, or put her in a cloth trainer with PUL or pull-ups just for the car.

Also, make it a habit to pee before you get in the car!

A piddle pad is going to be similar thickness to a cloth diaper. I would use that, chux pads (if you have them already), or a prefold.

I used to fold a cloth nappy an stick it in the seat. I know you are not supposed to have things between the seat and the child but since a couple of weeks before the child was wearing the nappy I felt OK.

I liked to be able to tuck the nappy between their legs, otherwise we ended up with a wet crotch strap.

That said we used pull ups for longer journeys as they seemed more comfortable.

We've never used anything waterproof on her car seat and we have never had an accident (PL at 23 mths).

Honestly, I wouldn't bother. Can your DD tell you when she needs to go and hold it long enough to get there?

I'd use a chux pad or a cloth diaper over a waterproof lap pad. If accidents are infrequent I package of chux pads would last her until she's done with that phase.

Oh, and chux pads are really great for leaking sippy cups too, lol.

You know, this is a really good question that I had not thought of (yet!) Thanks for asking!

ETA: Someone upthread mentioned a "piddle pad"- is this what you were referring to? http://www.kiddopotamus.com/p_pid.php Or is "piddle pad" just slang for something else?

I wouldn't think the Piddle Pad by kippopotamus would be safe in a car seat, but I gotta say..... I kinda love it on first glance!

We have the Piddle Pad. It is no thicker than a prefold, but waterproof on one side. Ds has peed in his seat numerous times. He doesn't always do well with realizing he needs to pee and then being able to hold it until we can deal with that. We also keep a potty and multiple changes of clothes in the car.

I like the piddle pad and it does keep the seat dry ( then I can just take it off and change ds's clothes and hope he doesn't pee again!)

We did chux pads a fee times before we got it and they made such a huge mess! DS would also get ahold or it and start pulling and ripping and shredding and before long the whole car was filled with fuzz!

we also use a piddle pad and believe it to be safe

I use a little flannel PUL backed pad I got and originally used as a changing pad for the newborn stage.  It's like 13x13, and no thicker than a once folded receiving blanket.  It fits under her bottom, and slightly up her back, and I didn't have to adjust the straps on her seat at all to accommodate it, so I feel it poses no risk.

We used those small waterproof lap pads or a prefold folded in half.
