Emotion\ Social Assesment

Okay so this may be a silly question BUT my ds who I have written a few threads on has some speech issues and some other quirks. He is obviously behind socially and has a lot of problem coping with emotions. He doesn't play with other kids at school, not even parallel play. They don;t have any problem with him at school, but of course it is very structured there and he doesn't talk there at all bc he is aware that people have a hard time understanding him.
Tonight while at Parent Teacher conferences, I discussed the above issues and other issues we have at home and asked for an assessment. She said she agreed and would get the ball rolling.

So my question is.... what are they assessing for? Is there some diagnosis? or just to point out he is delayed in that area? How does it work?

ETA I am not really looking for a diagnosis just to figure out how to help him best.

I am dealing with this right now with my daughter. From what I can understand the school/school district can not diagnose. So they will run an assessment and see if there are any delays. But if you think that there is an underlying issues that might need a diagnosis you should see your doctor.

My daughter, 4 is currently being assessed by her school for similar-ish issues. The school is assessing her abilities and if she has any delays but we are also pursuing a diagnosis through our doctor.
