keeping warm this season!

Looking for ways to keep ds, 7 months, warm this winter that don't involve feetie pj's. I have nothing against them, just looking for some other ideas. Socks never seem to stay on and his feet and hands get so so cold. I was thinking about getting (or making them if anyone knows of any tutorials) BabyLegs or something similar and layering them with pants? Not sure how this would work or look, though. And of course, hats!

We've started layering t-shirts (onesies just aren't convenient enough with ECing for me..), buttoned flannels, and zippered sweaters (sometimes hoodies, sometimes knit ones) for tops.. and count on our awesome wool longies for super-warm pants..

since we can't get socks to stay on his feet (7 months today!).. ever.... I've found some amazing wool boots on Etsy.  They're felted and have a suede bottom for non-slip and they have an elastic in the ankle part.  Now, this wee babe is a super chunker, and the elastics don't even cut in a tiny bit.. but hold those boots on through anything. Love them so much!

I also hate the footed sleepers.. and am still looking for ways to keep him warm that don't involve this many layers.. and still very much looking for a great winter jacket that doesn't break the bank.. and isn't made of windbreaker sounding material..    ??

We did find a great waffle-knit set of long underwear second hand.. it's super warm but still a bit too big.  Good to use the top with his wool longies though for bedtime.

BabyLegs or something similiar are wonderful! We use them every day when it is cold.  Especially around the house.  I put socks on her and then put the Babylegs on which help hold the socks on a little bit better.

Target has legwarmers (same as babylegs) for $4.00 in both boys and girls style.  I put the socks on and then the babylegs over the socks and that keeps the socks from falling off. I can't find them online.  They are from Target's Circo line.  I couldn't quite bring myself to spend $10 on a pair of legwarmers, $4.00 no problem.

we use legwarmers a ton here.  useful when pants are too short/too long.  just take an old wool sweater, wash and dry so that it felts, then cut the sleeves off around the elbow - voila, legwarmers!  old thrift store sweaters have some super funky patterns.  just make sure it's 100% wool so it will felt.

Thick velour pants are working really well for us so far. And a shirt with a sweater vest over top. Or a thin sweater, jacket. For going outside I pull a pair of fleece pants over top and a fleece jacket. We also a fleece one piece.  When the snow comes w/ colder temps and stronger winds we found this great puffy snow suit - the legs can either zip together as legs or zip another way for a bunty.

As far as socks go, we pull the socks up high. Some of the velour pants are fitted legs so they help keep the socks on longer. She did just pull her socks off, but she is inside, so c'est la vie. For outside, we have padraig leather soled slippers, which she does untie when she can get to her feet. But if she is on me, and we are walking, she cannot get to them and the shoes stay on.

And lots of knit hats.

For mittens... I had a few pair from when my son was a baby. If I pull them over top of her fleece jacket they stay on. And when I am carry her, it is not really an issue as she is more interested in the surroundings, rather then pulling things off her feet or hands. Although, after a 45 minute walk and arrival to our destination, her hands were a little cold.

fyi: she is almost 9 months

I'm also not a fan of footed sleepers - aside from the inconvenience of having to strip the kid naked to change a diaper, I didn't find they kept DS's feet all the warm.  We did socks and tiny slippers.  The slippers kept his socks on.  Robies or knock off Robies are good for that too.
