Valium!???

Saturday I'm going to be having three teeth pulled and a bone graft. The only available meds are valium and novocaine (and ibuprophen for after). But this would b such a difficult time to not nurse! Although my dentist claims that the recovery will be no biggie, I have heard the opposite from people who've had it done. So I'm scared that I'm going to be a mess after and Augie will be so sad and unhappy if we're not nursing. I would hate to have to go through that if I was on top of my game, but all swollen and in pain and zoned out from the stress of it... Ack!

Seriously, I need the valium AND I need to nurse. I'm supposed to have one before bed fri night and one an hour before the surgery. So I'm thinking maybe I can skip the first pill and then if Augie starts geting antsy to nurse in the first couple of hours after the surgery, my dh can take him out for a distraction for a couple of hours. That could probably get me to 5 hours post-pill or a little more.

I would not choose to drug my little guy with valium, but if the only effects were that he'd be groggy and relaxed, I kinda think hat's worth it. If there are effects beyond that... well it may just be a terrible weekend, and I having a hard time dciding who's needs are more pressing here, his or mine. lol

Alright... you guys are not a lot of help! lol But I thought I'd come back and leave an answer to my Q in case someone searches for this in the future (there are a ton of threads about it w/ no difinitive answer that I could find).

The answer in my case is, it's fine! A one time valium use (I'm actually taking 2 pills) by the mom of a 20 month old nursling is not a problem. At his age, the amount of valium that he'll get from my milk is miniscule and his body is mature enough to process it. The doctor I spok to said that they would say it was okay even if he was an infant but at this age it's a non-issue.

I got my info from Dr. Hale's Infant Risk Line -- number is at the bottom of this page: http://www.infantrisk.org/ . When I called an actual pediatrician answered! She seemed very knowledgable and experienced and had no problem talking through all of my concerns. We even talked about co-sleeping on valium. I highly recommend them if you have any drug related issue while nursing or pregnant.

This is awesome because I need to have oral surgery sometime and I've been putting it off until I didn't have a new born. I'm "hoping" (wrong word here) to get it done in the new year. I have a consult in about 2 weeks. My baby will be 1 in March.

I HOPE they give me vallium!
