BIL was diagnosed with lymphoma in september and is currently going through chemo. i was hoping to make him a variety of caps/beanies that he could wear.

i've checked out the patterns at chemocaps.com and headhuggers.org, but am looking for more. anyone have any patterns they love? plain and simple as well as fun and whimsical are what i'm looking for.

also, what would be the best kind of yarn to use for someone with no hair?

I'm sorry your BIL is ill.

This is my absolute favorite knit hat I've ever made. It's simple and you can make it bigger or smaller, with less ribbing or more, depending on your mood. For someone with no hair I would use a soft organic cotton or the softest merino or baby alpaca wool I could find.

I haven't tried this one yet but it looks cool. Maybe an acrylic aran yarn, like Caron Simply Soft, would be good? Kind of stretchy, a little silky, but still very warm. Or just a soft washable wool.

I really like the boyfriend hat on Ravelry. It's easy and pretty quick to knit.

I'm sorry about your bil--I'm not sure what type of yarn is best.

My favourite men's hat that I've ever knit is "Botanic" by Stephen West.  It was a very fun knit, and a super cool end result.  It's reversible with one side being funkier and the other more subtle.  I made one for my dh (he wears it on the "funky" side), and am going to knit one for my dad for Xmas (with the thought that he'll go for the "subtle" side).

As for yarn... hmmm... if he's going to be wearing it all the time (inside and outside) you might want to make it with something that's not too too hot... maybe avoid alpaca for ex.  If he's not worried about taking the hat off inside but needs extra warmth outside then I'd go with the warmest option.  Besides that I'd just go to your local yarn shop and feel the various yarns to make sure that you find something super duper soft and completely non-itchy.

Wishing your BIL well.  hug.gif

warmth is definitely not an issue, he lives in arizona.

Maybe cotton, bamboo or hemp would be good choices then.  Just look for something super soft.
