getting a toddler up a hill in winter

DD1's school is at the top of a big hill. DD2 (14 months) goes along for drop off and pick up.

Last year we used the stroller when the sidewalks were pretty clear, and the moby wrap or bjorn the rest of the time. DD2 is too heavy for me to carry on my front (I'm having problems with my pelvic joints), but I could do some sort of back carry - IDK if she would like it though.

I'd love to use something like a toddler sled, but it's rare that the sidewalks are consistently snowy, so I don't know how well that would work.

Thoughts? Tips?

How much snow are we talking about?

Around here a lot of people use bike trailers as strollers. The big wheels help them navigate snow quite well, and since they can be enclosed they are good for biting winter wind as well.

Exactly. That's what I do, and what most people in my community do. Don't get me wrong, it's still a lot of work to push 80 pounds (my older child, my toddler and the weight of the carrier) up the hill, but it's far easier than trying to *carry* said child to the top.

Lots of carriers would work well for a back carry of a kid that age. I use a woven wrap, a lot of people I know use Ergos.

A back carry would be fine. I hate strollers in the snow.

Also if you got a cheapy sled - i.e. a plastic one, then it wouldn't matter so much if it was scraping along bare sidewalk sometimes.
