Indulgences, pampering... What are *you* doing?

Just thought we all get so caught up in ttc, and every-day issues, that most of us forget about ourselves, and the little things that make us happy. For me, the things that make me happy are seeing DS and DH play crazy together, seeing DS accomplish something he didn't think he could do (like his basketball team's win today - first game of the season! ); seeing my students accomplish something they didn't think they could - or even just "get" a topic we're covering in class...

But for the purposes of this thread, I'm thinking more about the "naughty stuff" we're not "allowed" to do when we're pregnant.

What are you indulging in - "just in case" it's the last time you're "allowed" to do it?

For me, it's a glass or two (or possibly 3.... but by then I may as well just finish the bottle.... ssh!! The amount I actually drink probably averages out to half a glass every six weeks... how sad! ) of a nice red wine, accompanied by some triple-cream brie on fresh-baked bread drizzled with a good balsamic. Next week I'll have eggs for breakfast a couple of times, maybe some fresh prawns for lunch one day... (okay, so they're not technically indulgences, but my DH has a wide allergy range, so once it's even remotely possible I might be UTD I will stop all major allergens).

What's your vice?

Hm. Okay... at the risk of looking like I'm talking to myself (I don't normally... really.... so maybe sometimes... ) So, I can see that you ladies are reading this, but noone is replying................................ which makes me worry that you ladies are not looking after the most important person in your world - you!!

Let me try some of these...

The trouble with always trying to preserve the health of the body is that it is so difficult to do without destroying the health of the mind. ~G.K. Chesterton
(In other words, do something nice for yourself!)

My own prescription for health is less paperwork and more running barefoot through the grass. ~Terri Guillemets

Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit. When one is free from physical disabilities and mental distractions, the gates of the soul open. ~B.K.S. Iyengar

Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared. ~Hindu Prince Gautama Siddharta

Live in rooms full of light
Avoid heavy food
Be moderate in the drinking of wine
Take massage, baths, exercise, and gymnastics
Fight insomnia with gentle rocking or the sound of running water
Change surroundings and take long journeys
Strictly avoid frightening ideas
Indulge in cheerful conversation and amusements
Listen to music.

Ok.. I'm game. I didn't reply because I feel like I am ALWAYS gabbing away about MYSELF.

Right now I'm on steroids.. so I'm allowing myself to NOT look at the scale and to eat whatever I feel like (gluten free, of course) because I just want my body to heal. I treated myself to a manicure/pedicure after my first 7 days on antibiotics.. and I'm thinking a trip to the Korean spa for shiatzu and reflexology should get penciled in soon.

I love taking epsom salt baths and I usually throw in a few drops of essential oil like lavender, jasmine or a ylang ylang blend called "sensuality" - oh yes .

My vice? Well, usually when AF shows I indulge in a scotch or few. I find she is much more amenable after a nipper.

I agree that we should be thinking of and taking care ourselves. In one of the threads, Amyfemme said we should treat ourselves like we would our babies.

That is a good quote!

I have a wonderful book by Louise Hay called You Can Heal Your Life. In it she writes, "There is so much love in your heart that you could heal the entire planet. But just for now let us use this love to heal you"

Now see, this is what I'm talking about!! Yay Taxlady!!

I have had some gorgeous bubbles and bath salts that I won in MAY sitting in my bathroom cupboard, and still haven't "found the time" to use them. Methinks I need to make time while DH is overseas...

Well, I wouldn't want you two to have to carry the conversation all alone, so I'm going to hop in too

My indulgence is definitely alcohol.... oh, and sushi. I don't drink much, but usually once AF arrives I'll have a little something. Helps with the cramps, and the letdown of AF arriving!

In my area, it's hard to find really good sushi (not at all like when I used to live on the west coast). But I try to make a point of having some once a month or so. I'm not sure I'm going to stop when I get pregnant though... women in Japan have eaten sushi through pregnancies for a long time without mishap! So we'll have to see how it goes, when that comes up

I'm planning to indulge in some acupuncture after AF, if I'm not pregnant this month. Not everyone would find having needles stuck in them to be indulging, but I definitely do! I love the results too - some of the pain I carry in my back has only ever been relieved through acupuncture. Come to think of it, I think I'll indulge whether I'm pregnant or not!

Most of what I do already is "technically" for me-- gym with a trainer, massage therapy for my very curved neck (large boobs & years of bad posture), belly dance classes, epsom salts with lavender, taking time to sleep in or relax on the couch watching bad TV... I get spoiled a lot. I have an awesome husband and no kids to care for at the moment, heh. I also dyed my hair red and pink yesterday, which made me happy

I tried having a margarita last night for fun and to relax, but it was terrible and then gave me awful heartburn. Backfired!

OH I BET IT LOOKS AMAZING! I forgot that dying our hair is technically off limits too - I got mine done yesterday!

Oh c'mon.. that's not cool.. but getting spoiled is!

I hope that Musicoholic is taking a bath right now, while Livingsky is enjoying her Sushi! Yum..

Those Easterners/Asians seem to have it all figured out, Shiatzu, Accupuncture, Sushi, Korean Spa.. I see real trend. And Musicoholic's DH is in Thailand.

I had this amazing thermal massage a while back that made me feel so amazing... it was a gift but I am considering going back for another... maybe more than once.... even though it costs 130$ each time.

I'm supposed to be saving up my money so DH and I can buy a house and also because our income will drop significantly after we have our baby (1 year maternity leave + me working part time after that).

Also my favourite guilty pleasure is lying around all day reading a really good book or watching silly romantic comedy movies... not doing any housework or errands or anything... just being a bum all day.... I really need to find a way to do that again soon!

@Livingsky: ooh... how could I forget about sushi???????? And how true about Japanese women eating all the time!!!! I'm sure nori rolls would be okay with cooked fillings or vegetables.... might alleviate some "guilt" as well....

@Miriam: red and pink? Awesome!! I have really dark brown hair and dyed it blue-black a little while ago which I really liked.... I want to do it again the same colour - but with blue or purple or pink chunks underneath.......... hm. Although then I'd feel bad because our students have a "natural hair colour policy" (though that doesn't mean it has to be THEIR natural colour.... ) And I SO hear you about the boobs... Shame mine didn't do the job they were designed for And as for the no kids atm??? I don't reckon that'll be for too much longer. Enjoy the pampering while you can...

@Sourire: oh my. I can't remember the last time I lay around reading... Need to make time for that too!! Can someone buy me an 8th day?

@Taxlady: NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't say that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DH is not in Thailand until Thursday - same day I'm "due" to O!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't make him leave earlier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK I found a way to do this... I called in sick to work! I wasn't actually sick but I was feeling super depressed so I just stayed home and lounged around. I don't feel the least bit guilty.

Great thread!  How about my wish list? ---a yummy Swedish and hot stone massage, an acupuncture session, a morning at the salon (hair, nails, toes, facial), a long nap in the middle of the day!

Okay, what am I doing?  Not much!

Mmmm...a cup of hot chocolate after dropping off DD at school..

What a fantastic idea!!!!!!  You go girl!!!!!!  I wish I could call in sick....  I have SOOOOOOOOO much work to do right now - and noone who can do ANY of it for me....  sad face.  lol.gif    But have holidays in like 4 weeks - so am planning on doing as little as possible - especially because there will be 2 or 3 days where DS still has to go to school...  orngbiggrin.gif

I'll bite!

... And I'll second (or 4th.. 7th...) a good glass of wine or other spirit!  I've firmly decided that one drink a month is just fine.  Usually my "glass" isn't even a "full size" serving of alcohol.  smile.gif   I'll also add my vote for epsom salts and EO bath... I'll miss bergamot.... okay, so I'd give up bergamot forever if it meant I could get preggo whenever I want.  I got a massage for the first time in years last week... that might become a more regular thing.... ahhhhhhhh

My other indulgences:  sleeping in (and sleeping like a rock!), making up for too little sleep with caffeine in the morning (maybe once a month), and acupuncture....

Writing this makes me feel like my whole life is a big indulgence-fest... maybe that makes the rest of it better :P

Because I'm on holiday for the next 5 or so weeks, I'm actually going to try to look after *me* a bit better for a change.  So, my plans are:

  • to get a new hairstyle on Wednesday (okay, so it's really a new old hairstyle...  I just need a cut - it's only been 12 months.......  lol.gif)
  • to clear all DS's toys out of the bath (it's in his bathroom, we have a shower ensuite), buy some pretty scented candles and have a book'n'bath after he's gone to bed tomorrow night (it would be tonight, but DH is having Christmas drinks with the guys he teaches)
  • to buy some new underwear (I have plenty of good, sensible work-day undies - I think it's way past time I treated myself to some pretty ones just for me......  and for DH's viewing pleasure........ Sheepish.gif lol.gif)
  • catch up on reading reading reading!!!
  • catch up on some baking!

Anyone else?  Or are we all getting caught up in forgetting about the most important person in our world again?  I know I have been...

wave.gif I just got my hair done (hi lights, low lights and a cut!) joy.gif I was going to try to get a mani-pedi, but I don't know if I'll make it this week (last chance I have before we leave for our wedding/honeymoon).

You know...I *just* got done making a BFN list and then I found this post! I got the idea from a fellow MDC mamma. I am TTC after a loss and it gets so tough month after month. I finally sat down and made a "BFN List" and each month that AF arrives, I will pick one thing off the list and indulge. I'd love to share my ideas because I know we all go through a lot when we get that terrible negative! Feel free to steal my ideas:

Go Skiing (we love to ski and are lucky enough to live in proximity for a day trip!)

Get a message

Big Glass of Red Wine

Eat Oysters

Take a Hot Bath with Bath Salts

Have a fruity martini

Refelxology

Go Ice Skating

Visit the local brewery for a tasting

Eat goat cheese! (one of my favorites)

Enjoy a nice espresso

Take a hot yoga class

Have a big sushi dinner

Fly somewhere for a weekend getaway (cocktails included!)

Enjoy! While all of these sound lovely, I'm hoping not to be able to indulge in too many of them!

Good luck to all :)

The only thing I've 'given up' for the 2WW is aspartame. I cut back on coffee. The chances of me being in a social situation where I'd drink is pretty slim. I think the only thing I'll really, really, really miss is Advil the next time I get a migraine. I can't go to restaurants when I'm in my first trimester, because the air in them makes me feel sick (I think because of the fryers) so the last few times we've been out I thought about that.
