...and I just wanted to add applause for your friend the "boob lady," tiacsophno.

A professor of mine just had a conversation about me and nip with others at my university. Many women were asking about getting a room where women could breastfeed their babies. My prof told them all about me and the fact that I nurse anywhere, even around the young frat-boys that populate my U. Most of the women were supportive but there were a few who were uncomfortable with the idea of nursing in front of their students (most were faculty).

Now, that made me wonder, how many people are grossed out by my nip.
I had honestly never thought about it.
I see it as my duty to nurse all over the place, to show everyone that it is ok.
I agree with just smiling and acting like you are the "normal" one. LOL.

I agree! A friend told me that if someone has a problem with it then they are the one with the problem.

I find this discussion very interesting!

In theory, I support brazen breastfeeding. In practice, I just can't do it. I hide it, I do it in the car, or if I have to do it really really in public, I use a blanket or the sling to cover up as much as possible without covering his head. I'd like to be a discreet nurser, but none of my babies have ever been the latch on and suck steadily kind of babies. They pop on and off at will, which I suppose has made me self-conscious.

But in theory, I support brazen breastfeeding and I applaud women who are braver than me to go about doing it!

(That's not to say I would EVER make my baby wait, I wouldn't. If he needs to eat, he eats. But I do "plan" my excursions around his breastfeeding and try to time it to do it in the car if possible. But I'd never let him fuss or cry from hunger. I have nursed at Chili's restaurant with my 12 year old son. He was mortified. "Mom is that LEGAL?" He doesn't even bat an eye now and told me that whole Janet Jackson nipple thing was silly. It's just a nipple he said . I nursed at my daughters' Reading Classic competition. I went into the bathroom, latched him on and cinched up the Maya sling, and went back in to the competition room. My very first nursing in sling experience and he's my 4th baby! Just wanted to clarify that I do nurse in public if my babe needs it, but that I try to "schedule" around it if I can.)

On the other hand, she gets a lot of flak for it. LLL leaders and other friends have told her that she is "not helping our cause" because she is "turning people off from breastfeeding".
I don't think it's our job to "further a cause" or to "recruit" more breastfeeders. I think our main goal is to feed our babies in the way they want, and if others look at us and decide they want to breastfeed as well, that's great!

LLL Leaders have to walk a fine line. They need to advocate for the most moms to bf for as long as possible. Some new moms are very naive and very conservative. They may not return to a LLL mtg if they see a mom nurisng very openly. Then they might wean prematurely. And Leaders feel bad for their babies.

Most Leaders make a disclaimer at the beginning of the mtg saying if you see or hear anything here that you feel is not right for you, please don't let it hinder you from coming back. Take what works and leave the rest, like a salad bar.

For ex, a mom I used to know would wear a jump suit (back when they were in style) to a LLL mtg, unbuttoned to the waist to nurse, no bra, and when her nursing toddler was done feeding, would just sit there with both breasts out, in case the kid came back! A bit overboard? What should a Leader do? Well, the Leader did nothing, but didn't feel real great about the situation.

OTOH, one mom here shared a story about how being discreet just isn't possible sometimes. She was out with her toddler. She had been suffering from a plugged duct. They were in a park nursing on a bench. Suddenly the child sucked out the plug and ran off to play. Milk began pouring out of her breast and there was nothing she could do but lean over and let it pour on the ground! If the one this happened to reads this and I didn't get the story quite right, I apologize!

I can see how it would be hard for LLL to come up with separate meetings for tandem nursers, those nursing preschoolers, twins/triplets, those who like to nurse completely topless, etc.

What's one of these moms to do, though?

Well, happily LLL tries to serve the entire bfing population by making new moms the focus of the regular mtgs, and providing toddler, multipples and tandem mtgs as well in many communities.

While everyone is welcome at the regular meetings, Leaders try to get the messge across the regular mtgs serve the newer moms first, as they need it the most, most of the time.

LLL does not provide all topless mtgs tho! :LOL Although I am sure my dh would love to imagine they all are that way.
