Taking advantage of the local Asian grocery

Hi,

I just made a trip to my locally owned, Asian grocery store, and saw that they carry many nourishing, nutrient dense foods that might be cheaper/less expensive than buying at our local fish market. I ended up buying some frozen shrimp, mussels and octopus for soup/stews, but I feel completely ignorant when it comes to Asian cooking! I am pregnant and would like to up my intake of fish broths and seafood in general. Any suggestions? I also noticed that some of their canned products (like coconut milk and fish sauce) contain added preservatives, colorings, sugars, and additives. They also had a bunch of frozen yellow croakers...like 7 for 10 dollars! This seems like a great deal for fish stock, maybe? They carried dried shrimp, seaweed, frozen seafood, and even fresh kimchee! What do you buy at the local Asian store? Any good blogs or website recommendations to help with cooking nourishing Asian foods?

Thanks for any help...I am completely clueless how to even make a fish stock yet, but know I want to try to incorporate these foods into my diet now!

My daughter really likes this book.

Fish stock is pretty easy. I generally just use the heads and carcass for fish stock. And for Japanese cooking you can't beat katsuobushi aka bonito flakes for dashi stock
