I have found that when you encourage people to talk about themselves, they perceive you as the most scintillating conversationalist. People never get bored talking about themselves.

I agree with E.V. Lowi. Conversational rules I try to follow (sometimes succeed, often not):
1. Ask about themselves and ask lots of follow-up questions.
2. Rarely, if ever, start with "I", "In my opinion," "According to me," and the like.
3. Try to say everything in three sentences if possible.
Of course sometimes you can't and you have to explain in detail, or it really is all about you. But for casual conversation those rules will take you far, though they are HARD to observe, LOL!

1. Read voraciously. I've found that people who read are the most interesting to talk you.
2. Keep up to date on current events.
3. Cultivate your eccentricities.
I'm told I'm never boring to talk to. I've recently met some new people and people keep asking me in an amazed tone, "Where did YOU come from?"

Yep, I read a variety of fiction and non-fiction.
I'm pretty up to date on what's happening around our community..... free concerts and cool things to do.
I also volunteer at various events that help me accumulate more knowledge and neat experiences.
I have a big, easy smile and I ask questions.
