Brunch fruit thing?

Our family has been invited to brunch next week by one of our friends.

They're going to make all the hot dishes but requested that we bring fruit. I'd rather not do a fruit salad because thats been done to death here, and its a bit boring.

Any ideas of what I could do to fruit that would make it new and fresh (pardon the pun) again? If it matters, there will be sausages, eggs, pancakes and scones for brunch.

Someday, the watermelon whale will be new again. Far, far into the future? OK, maybe. But one never knows.

Fruit skewers might be good. same old fruit, new presentation? Maybe a yogurt fruit dip?

Fruit and yoghurt (+/- museli) layered in a big bowl or individual glasses?

My suggestion for making it cool: get a melon baller. It makes everything look super awesome. Also, I would use cut strawberries (pointy end facing out) around the edge of the platter.
Id use:
Canteloupe
Strawberries
Pineapple
Red Grapes (seedless)
Honeydew
Bananna

Considering the time of year and the OPs location, i'd probably stick w the skewers and yogurt dip, or just a fruit platter.

apple, grapes, oranges, fuyu persimmons, pears, asian pears are pretty much all thats in season. Melons and berries will be imported, taste like cardboard and be expensive. You could add some tropicals like pineapple, banana and mango if you like, and the budget allowed, but just a variety of different colored in season fruits would satisfy me at this time of year.

Pomegranates!

Fruit salad in November to me means pomegranates! Love them! Here's a salad that would use seasonal fruits:

Pomegranate Persimmon Fruit Salad

If that's not for you, what about something focusing on apples and pears? Pear compote? Cinnamon apples? HTH!

Yes, stuff like melons are rare and expensive now here and I'd rather not have to buy them if I can help it.

I rather like the idea of a fruit skewer but since the brunch thing will have 5 headstrong kids between the ages of 6mo and 6yo, the chances are that someone will get hurt.

I LOVE the idea of pomagrantes! I might do an apple, pear, grapes, frozen blueberries (picked this summer), pomagrante salad with a strawberry yoghurt side for those who want a little dip.

Thanks everyone!
