I Feel Like My House is Falling Apart (Rant Alert)

Is it just me, or has quality of products and workmanship gone downhill?

Consider this:

1.Five months ago, we had a new sink installed, and the bronze finish is already peeling off of the drains.

2.The landscapers who did our yard two years ago put berms in front of our foundation and crammed trees together (in order to charge us for more, presumably). I was too naĂŻve at the time to know better!

3.We had new cabinets installed three months ago in our laundry room, and the finish is peeling.

4.We had vertical blinds installed two years ago, and the plastic clips holding them up keep losing their grip and breaking. The blinds themselves are really suceptible to their paint chipping. A local window covering place installed them, and the blinds are the Hunter Douglas brand. We spend $2500 to get three windows covered.

5.We hired some self-proclaimed “professionals” to do our interior painting, and to this day I keep finding new nasty suprises—wall paint splattered on the trim,

6.We hired a roofer to replace the plastic vents on our roof with metal ones. He installed them by nailing straight through the shingles. We didn’t realize this until other roofers came and looked at our roof for an unrelated problem.

Does nobody take pride in their work anymore? Do they just not care because they don’t live here and they just want my check?

And on a more practical note, is it too late to call these people two years after the fact? I would think that they should stand behind the job they did…..right?

Sucks doesn't it! i think you are probably out of luck thinking they will come fix the problems. I've only met one plumber/electrician who really stood behind his work.

We bought a brand new house five months ago. The caulking around the bathroom sinks has been redone three times and is still peeling away. The dishwasher repair person has been to our house three times and the problem is still not resolved. Of course they won't just replace the damn thing. All the springly things on the back of the doors (too keep them from banging into the walls) have broken - made of plastic, of course. The towel rack in the kids bathroom came down with one tug (gee, apparently screwing it right into the drywall wasn't such a great idea). Yeah, I find it annoying. And for the most part I think our house is well constructed and solid, but these annoying little corners that have been cut still drive me crazy.

Most of those things are things i would bitch about. The items less than 6 mos old you should be able to contact the manufacturer. The roofer i would definitely call back out to fix his f/u, but thats just because ive discovered that around here no roofer will touch another roofers work. How old is the roof?

The painters, not much to be done other than leaving bad reviews on places like angies list.

The shade shop should be able to come repair the problems. All our shades are from a local shade shop and we just had them out here last month to repair a 12 yr old curtain. We were charged for a service call (flat rate, i think), but not for parts.

W the landscaper, you can call them out to fix their mess, but theyre liable to charge you for it. If you trust theyll get it right the 2nd time since now you know better, do it. Or else do the same as the painters and hire someone else.

Vancouver Mommy, it's so validating to hear that you have similar issues. I know that this sounds so Pollyanna, but I just give people the benefit of the doubt and assume that they take pride in their work. FIL is a really hard-working and perfectionist tradesman, so I start to believe that everybody is like him.

Thanks for the other replies. The landscaping I'll just deal with. The roofers and window covering people I'll call when I'm in a better mood. (I'm having a rough morning for unrelated reasons). Thanks again!

Is Angie's List worth it, in your opinion? I know that they charge, but I'm not sure how much. I'd love to know, if you have any experience with it.

Afraid I don't have any experience with it. But I've been contemplating it. We have to have our roofers back out after several years to fix their f/ups, and I would never in a million years willingly give them more money, but like I said, no other roofer will touch the problem, so we're stuck. I'd love to warn people away, but not sure I'm willing to pay to do it.

Around here, we have what's called "Diamond Certified" tradesmen. I believe they're branching out into other regions. But it's a customer driven listing of reliable tradespeople. The main problem being that sometimes you don't have a choice - only 1 name on the list, which makes comparison shopping difficult.

NO- we used both a landscaper and tried to get a handyman from Angies list and the following happened. The Landscaper was great after 17 phone calls to get him to show up, he did one lawn cutting and never came back. The handyman never returned phone calls and obviously we never had any work done.

So I would skip the Angieslist. Most area's have a feedback system for service folks online (in some manner).
