BG 3.0s have ammonia smell after baby pees

Thread Starter
I've been researching and this sounds like a common problem. It's the first time we've experienced this in the 18 months we have used the BG 3.0s.

We normally wash with Planet liquid detergent, 1 cold wash, 1 hot wash, then machine dry the inserts and hang dry the shells. Sometimes we use some Bac-Out in the cold wash cycle.

So I've come across a few conflicting suggestions for getting rid of the ammonia smell (which is only after DD pees in them or they sit in the diaper pail) but it's really strong.

These are:
-1/4 cup bleach
-1/4 cup vinegar
-1 squirt Dawn (the blue colored one)

I want to know which one of these is the best, since I don't want to use them all, and if I should add whatever one I choose in the cold or hot cycle.

Thanks!

The Dawn suggestion should be for removing oil build-up on your diapers, because it is a great grease-cutter, but it sounds like your problem is the core of the diaper isn't getting clean enough. I would try adding more detergent to your wash and an extra rinse.

boil the inserts, maybe with a drop of dawn if you want but it's probably not needed.

if the fleece stinks, do a hot water wash and scrub them with a nail brush and dawn, rinse in the tub much faster than in the wash, then wash the whole batch together in hot till they run clean. can do the 1/4 cup bleach 1x per month like the BG website suggests in the first wash, then rinse rinse rinse.
