Resuming selective vaccination with my 3 year old.. have questions

My 3 year old has a religious exemption for the state of Alabama as does my five year old. DS2 has had 3 Dtap shots and 2 Polio. How many more Dtap does he need? I seem to remember it being 4 after the age of 3? I am getting ready to make his appointment but can't remember what else he might need. Also, Alabama has a vaccine registry with no opt out. Am I gonna lose my exemptions? DS1 is fully vaccinated minus the last dose of MMR. DS2 is no where close, but I intend to have him fully vaccinated to Alabama school requirements, which are VERY different from the AAP recommendations. Thanks!

If you fulfill the school requirements, then that's all you need. You would no longer need an exemption. But let's say that you weren't going to be finished right away or by the start of school, then it might matter because if the school DOES check that registry they would see that you are missing some and the fact that you got some would negate the exemption.

But if you older child, the one I assume is close to going to school, has only 1 MMR left to get, I would say this is not an issue. The 3 year old would need only 1 more DtaP and 2 more polio...UNLESS you wait until he is 4 and the third dose would be the last one needed.

My problem with the exemption lies with my five year old. I delayed the MMR until he was 18 months old, and did it alone. He IMMEDIATELY broke out in a severe head to toe rash, we had to stay at the doctors office 2 hours and be observed to make sure he didn't have a more severe reaction anaphylactic reaction. So needless to say he won't be getting the second dose. Problem is, I don't know if our ped will consider that enough of a reaction to write a medical exemption. It was severe enough that we had to sit with the nurses for two extra hours, but didn't do any permanent damage and went away within a week. So I am afraid if I start vaccinating my 3 year old I will lose exemptions for both of them.

It would seem that going for that medical exemption (or finding a doctor that will help you with that) would be the best way to go because it would allow you to do everything you want: vaccinate your youngest according only to school standards AND keep your older son from needing the MMR.

or it might be the case that your school doesn't look too deeply into these things, kwim? maybe they don't go check the registry when they have an exemption placed in front of them. If you son is partially vaccinated and in school on this exemption right now, this may very well be the case: they have not yet bothered you, kwim?

I'm lucky, he's currently at a private church kindergarten where they aren't required to go by DHR standards because they are a church school, but they do. So, I gave them a religious exemption for DS2 when he was just starting in Mom's Day Out, and they just reuse it every year until he graduates kindergarten. I don't even think they have "access" to the registry. DS1 had to get an exemption this year because the MMR is required for Kindergarten admission, and they didn't bat an eye.DS3 hasn't had any vaccines, and won't until he's older. I have no real problem with the vaccines themselves, just the fact that they get SO many so early! I still worry about losing DS2's current exemption if I give him anymore vaccines though. I know the school won't look, but could it flag something for the state? It should not be so hard to simply MODIFY a recommended schedule and still let your LO attend Mom's Dat Out once a week.

what about a titers blood test to see about his measles antibodies before the second mmr? i dont know about your state, but ny only requires 1 measles dose, so i will check his blood to see if he needs another.
