New Home: Organization Pointers?

Hi Everyone,

I am not a naturally neat or organized person, but have come a long way...am trying to cultivate both. I work full time from a home office and am soon to be single mother to three. We just moved into a new home (yay!) and I know that one of the keys to keeping things neat is making it easy to do. Any great ideas from those who have this mastered or even those who don't but have found tricks and tips that work well for them?

I've looked at some of the other threads here and they are helpful. We have a ton of books but overall we aren't too stuff intensive. We have a dry basement here which is great for storage (off season clothes and toy rotation) so I think we have potential....

Thank you in advance for sharing!

One thing I have learned is to think outside the box when it comes to organizational items. For example at the local 100 Yen store they have "underwear organizers", well I found they are the perfect size for pencils/pens and I use them to organize our desk drawers. Its a lot easier and cheaper then the desk organizers that are sold.

Congrats on the new home!

1)  Owning fewer items means that you will have fewer items to maintain, organize and keep track of.  So, declutter as much as possible!

2)  Give everything that you do own a specific place within your home.

3)  Pick up at least twice a day.

4)  Stem the flow of new items that come into your home.

     a.  address paperwork (mail, schoolwork, etc.) daily

     b.  follow the one-in-one-out rule

     c.  rethink any non-consumable purchase
