Reclining Highchairs - do I need one? - Page 2

You know, I actually did appreciate the recline feature on our highchair, because when DS was around 4-5ish months, he would enjoy sitting at the table with the rest of us during mealtime. He was secure in the 5 point straps and slightly reclined as he was nowhere close to sitting up unsupported at that point.

He certainly didn't eat any food with us at that early age, but he enjoyed sitting at the same height as everyone else and watching us eat, rather than being stuck in a bouncer or bumbo on the floor, or on top of the table (eeeek! I've never been comfortable with the seat on top of the table!)

But really, it's not something you *have* to have, probably not something you'll miss out on in the grand scheme of things.

I actually used ours a lot for a place to put DD to play while I did dishes and whatnot. We also sat her in it while we ate supper every night. We used the recline feature with five point harness from about 4 - 5 months. I really liked having her at eye-height while doing kitchen work so we could interact more easily. We have a VERY small kitchen/house and the high chair worked really well for us for this purpose.

That said, chairs with a recline are generally really bulky and annoying in other ways, and now that our reclining period is over I kind of (okay, REALLY) hate our chair. If you are satisfied with your cooking/kitchen cleaning situation, DEFINITELY don't bother looking for a reclining, 5-point harness chair.

Wow, thanks for all your responses.

I'm going ahead with the non-reclining wood one. Yeah!

Someone mentioned the Handysitt - I LOVE that one and would have considered getting it but my LO is tall and heavy and I could see it wouldn't be long that she would grow out of it! (we went to a shop that has them and tried to get her in one!) Oh well, found a wood one second hand for a great price.

And for the record, we are waiting to start solids till 6 months and sitting independently and no tongue thrust... and when I say wobbly, I mean, if I sit her in the center of my bed, she falls over about once every 5 minutes... so she's almost there! Oh, and we don't have a bouncy chair. We have a vibrating rocker thing that was gifted to us, but she's not super keen on being on he floor and I have about 4 square feet of counter so nowhere up high to put her!

Thanks everyone for helping make the decision!
