I've always had the base GE gas dryers. (Although my current one--which is about 6 years old--doesn't appear to be on their website anymore. It has a programmable touch pad while it appears they have now gone back to dials.)

They function well and don't seem to consume too much gas. I generally run my 4-5 times a week, plus we have a gas stove and gas water heater, and our summer gas bill is around $30/month.

Do you have a big appliance store in your area (something like Grant's Appliance)? I'd go there and look around at the dryers, ignore the sales pitch, see what you like and don't like about the various dryer options, and then come home and research for reviews on the ones you like, and the best deals.

I've always heard that dryers with all the fancy gadgets don't really do much more or better than the most basic dryer. Basically, they heat and spin, yk? Anyway, gas is most efficient.

I just wanted to throw out that you might consider a used gas dryer.

Also cleaning out the lint trap and dryer hose and doodads (I'm not a 100% on what everything is called) will help your dryer run more efficiently.

In my experience, gas dryers have the potential to run hotter than electric. This isn't necessarily a good thing. Buy one with a gentle or delicate heat setting, if you want your clothes to last. That is pretty much the only "gadget" I require from a dryer....a low heat setting (not just air). I love our Kenmore gas dryer and despised our GE gas dryer. The only difference that matters to me is the low heat setting. I use that setting for all clothing.

We also line dry outside (linens) and rack dry inside (clothing) after a few minutes in the dryer, which helps fabric last longer and reduces the gas consumption.
