Getting odors out of toys

Thread Starter
I scored a bunch of used Waldorfy toys, including a wooden doll house, felted play food, playsilks, etc.

Some of the wooden items have pen marks & I've read that Magic Eraser is best for removing the pen marks & that they may also need a light sanding. Should I use some beeswax polish on them after that?

Also, almost all of the toys smell like smoke. Is there something I can spray on them to get rid of the smoke smell? It's so pervasive.

Any other suggestions for cleaning, deodorizing, and/or sanitizing wood, felt, wool, & silk?

TIA!!!

Vinegar is supposed to be good at getting rid of smoke residue. Since the residue is greasy you need something to cut through it.

I would avoid using any wax or finishes on the wooden things until you are sure the smell is gone, I'd be worried about just sealing it in.
