Other people's gender expectations/disappointments - Page 3

Ugh, I totally hear you. When I was talking to my dad about the baby's sex (DH and I plan to wait to find out the sex), he told me that my sister and I were his favorites and that he cried when my youngest brother was born because he was hoping for another girl. Not quite sure what to do with that information.

When we found out it was going to be a girl, A LOT of people were telling us we were so lucky to have one of each. I've tried to be nice and say "We've just been hoping it's healthy."

After awhile, it's gotten to the point where my inner snark diva has gotten out to play. Recent responses to the "Oh! You're so lucky to have one of each!" comment:

- We were really disappointed it wasn't a puppy.

- (to an annoying woman with a toddler boy) It's a girl, so we'll be talking to your son in a couple of years for an arranged marriage.

- Of course we're having a girl. I was on top.

- One of each? Beh. We totally wanted a matched set.

- We really wanted a boy. Eirik doesn't have enough pee to write his name in the snow by himself.

- (to an overly nosey and chatty dolt at the store) It IS awesome we're having one of each. Let's just hope they're the same color.

My side of the family has 5 girls and his side of the family has 2 girls and 1 boy.  Everyone is putting the pressure on for another boy.  My husband is the last of his namesake so naturally we have to have a boy to carry on the family name.  Duh!

We have friends that just had a baby an were so relieved to find out they were having a boy.  They said the pressure from their family was unrelenting.  I'm not sure how families can do this to each other.  Some pregnancies are stressful enough as it is without throwing in a gender expectation.  We prayed for a child when the time is right and we are happy to have and rasie what ever the good Lord sees fit!!
