Card games for a 5yo?

Until recently, DS has resisted games. Occasionally, we would play chuts and ladders or candyland but he would immediately get frustrated by any set-backs or if someone would be ahead of him. Not fun for anyone.

But then this weekend, we played Uno for at least two hours on Saturday night and for another hour Sunday morning. It was so much fun!

I don't know why the card game is more appealling than board games but no matter, we want to keep the game ball rolling

Does anyone have any suggestions for other card games that a 5 yo may be able to learn?

(I don't know how to play any of the traditional card games (besides war) but would be willing to get a book and learn)

Go Fish is very appropriate at that age, and it sets you up for learning Poker. LOL!

(ETA... my daughter is at that "we all have to tie" age and it's so boring, LOL, good to hear there is an end in sight...)

Old Maid. Maybe Skip-Bo? I remember playing that with my gma but don't know how old I was...

HA! DH asked when did I think DS would be able to learn poker?

We know all these people who get together with their family and friends for card playing nights and that sounds like so much fun, which is why we want to learn (and teach DS) so we can do that too.

I was seven and my sister was five when my dad taught us five-card stud. (My sister is great with memory games and rules, probably exceptional--I think seven, easily, if he can play cards now, if not earlier.)

My dd is REALLY into cards. We play: Old Maid, Go Fish, War, Color Rummy (she has a special ballerina deck where you try to get five cards of the same color), Skip-Bo, Crazy 8s, Slap Jack, and Uno. We must have about 10 different sets of cards at this point.....I bet she'd be into Poker, but I can never remember what beats what

There is a card game called "Blink" that my kids love. I found it at Target. My 6 year old loves it, and my just-turned 4 year old can play with us as well. And it is fun to me to play with them. It's fast-paced matching either colors, symbols, or numbers of items on a card. You can even things out for different aged players by varying the number of cards that each player gets (give fewer cards to the younger ones). It's a favorite at our house!

My son's favorites are a version of war with Egyptian characters, Orchard (the card game version) go fish, and Uno.  We tend to favor card games because they are portable and easy to set up/clean up, though we have a whole closet of board games!

Go Fish is the favorite here; Crazy Eight second.  We're going to teach her to play hearts next - she's intrigued by the idea of a game where the person with the least points wins. smile.gif

We love BLINK and also Slamwich-both are card games. Gamewright seems to have several different card games-not the same traditional type. Uno is also a big hit here-we have a 5year old.
