DS read a book !

DS1 is 7.5 and a vision therapy patient; he has been working on severe tracking issues...and when he was tested about halfway through VT, he was also found to have very poor form constancy and visual closure, and bottom-of-the-scale visual sequential memory, which turns out to make sight words very hard to learn. We have been working very, very hard on vision therapy and reading.

And he read his first whole book today (that is not a Bob book). He read Put Me In the Zoo. He did lose his place a couple times; he did substitute some words; and on a few pages he had trouble finding the text at all. But he read it, cover to cover.
I'm super proud of how hard he has worked to get to this point.

We struggled with tracking too..so I know what you mean. It is a great feeling! Celebrate it in a special way!

How wonderful! Tracking was my son's main problem too - and he had major improvement by the 20th session of therapy. He also had one eye turned in a tiny bit, and we never really thought about that in relation to reading until we had him tested and the doctor pointed it out. Congratulations to your son! Lillian

Eye tracking exercises

Have you been given eye tracking exercises? Does your son use anything to isolate the line he is reading, eg. cut a slot in a piece of construction paper to fit over just one line.

Yes, he's been doing eye tracking exercises since February. The current one involves four Hart charts stuck to the wall and he has to read letters from them - like first letter third row on chart 1, 2, 3, and 4, then 2nd letter same row from each chart, then 3rd letter, like that. He also uses "saccadic sticks" to get his saccadic movements coordinated. Part of his exercises involve him reading while I uncover only one complete word at a time, to keep him from guessing and skipping. But for this, I let him try to take the book and just read. He's never been able to do it before.
