My four-year-old son has had a dry cough for over two months now It's not a serious cough, but the length of time it's been around isn't good. I dragged my feet about taking him to the doctor, because I was pretty sure he'd say it's asthma and put him on daily drugs for it. We went today, and the doc wants my son to be using Singulair ("It has no side effects, really, so there's nothing to worry about"). He also gave him a prescription for an albuterol inhaler to be used "as needed", but it shouldn't be needed if he's taking the Singulair, I was told.

I read the list of possible side effects, and I really don't want to give it to my son. Plus, the thought of being on a drug that is supposed to suppress the immune system doesn't sound like a good idea, especially with a family history of auto-immune diseases. So, I'm kicking myself for being in denial for so long, but now I need to figure out how to help my son, hopefully without Singulair. Any suggestions?
